Back pain symptoms may seem obvious. But do you know when symptoms of back pain are more serious or when to see a doctor? Learn what action to take & when...
Had L4-5 microdiscectomy 2+ years ago and the surgery was successful. However, I'm stuck with chronic low back pain from muscle spasms; have tried every treatment out there. Need a recommendation for a greater Boston area physician who is not afraid to treat/prescribe for chronic pain. Sick of being made to feel like a drug-seeking addict every time I see my MD. (Would like to see her live with my pain for a week or two; bet her viewpoint would shift radically.) Anyone have any recommendations for a good pain management physician?

Are you still having muscle spasms and pain? I had my entire back fused from my neck thru the sacrum when I was 15 years old. Everything went great. I even had 2 more back surgeries due to a car accident and all went well. However after having 5 children by C-section, I lost feeling in my legs, and lost bladder and bowel control.
I had a 17 hour long neuro surgery, and woke up with all feeling returned to my lower half. I lied in bed for several days, so happy that all had worked out. However when the nurse tried to help me sit up for the first time, I had the worst muscle spasms shoot thru my back. It stopped the moment I stood up, but the Second I moved, the spasms started again. I was told this was normal.
Making this story shorter, after a year of relentless pain anytime I moved or was moved, I chose to lie in bed all the time. Doctors didn't know what to do. One Evening I tried to take my life. This led to see hospital stay and doctors finally thinking this pain must be pretty bad. I was referred to a progressive Pain Clinic that prescribes narcotics and other meds, as well as a thorough psych evaluation every 3 months.
My pain had been adequately controlled for 12 years now. I have not had to increase the dosage, and at one point was doing so well I thought the spasms might be controllable without the narcotics. So the doctor helped to wean me off. However, that same, ugly, mean pain was still there much to my dissapointment.
All this is to say: find someone who will listen. Make them listen. You may never be the same person you were before surgery; but the Humane Society would arrest a doctor if they let a pet live in the same kind of pain I was living in. And that's just not right!
I hope you have found relief.
