I am a 28 year old female. I was diagnosed with graves disease in 2005 and was treated with radioactive iodine. This has given me an underactive thyroid for which I take 150mcg thyroxine daily. I had an eye test in Oct 2007 and was told I had a slight deterioration but my prescription did not need changing. I purchased new glasses on the 10th May 2008 and on the 6th June 2008 went to my GP complaining of a headache for 3 weeks. It has never gone away. The pain is situated on the left side behind my eye and aund my temple. I have seen a neurologist who has diagnosed chronic migraine. I have tried anti depressants, NSAIDs, bta blockers and am now on anti epileptics all of which have not helped. I have also tried physio and chiropractic therapy. Recently my left eye has started twitching when I read and I have pain in my eyes when looking up, this also worsens my headache. Could it simply be my glasses? I am at my wits end as it is affecting my life. I was not stressed until my headaches appeared and have a happy home and work life. Please help, any suggestions would be appreciated Rolling Eyes

You poor thing. Your cases sounds fairly complicated, as you have a number of variables and changes that you've made in your life in the past years. New diagnosis, new medications, new glasses, etc.

Have you considered hormone therapy for the migraine? My sister in law experienced debilitating migraines that were helped with this type of treatment. Additionally, you might want to contact some migraine associations. Organizations like these might be able to help connect you with doctors or answers:

* American Headache Society, Committee on Headache Education
* American Pain Foundation
* National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke

Thankyou for your suggestion. I have contacted some headaches/migraine specialists today. I'm not sure about my hormone levels. My migraine (if thats what it is) hasn't changed in the last 6 months and doesn't worsen around my periods. I have had a very busy morning at work and my headache was bearable, then I went on a relaxing shopping trip with my mum for her birthday. I have just got home and my head is very painful, feels like a very bad handover. The pain is centred right behind my left eye. I am so baffled by it, you would think it would have been worse during work. I will mention the hormone probability to my doc though, thanks for replying, just some advice is very comforting covereyes

Does the pain go away or lessen at all when you have your glasses off for a while? I use to get migraines from my glasses, either being too tight behind my ears or the prescription was wrong. Also I have heard that if you take your pointer finger and thumb, pinch fairly hard where they join on the other hand. This is suppose to help you relax and might lessen your pain. I hope it works for you.

Hi, thanks for your message. It's a bit difficult because I m so short sighted without them I can't see more than 5 inches in front of me. The only time I ever take them off is in the shower or bath for about 5 minutes and actually I do feel better after a shower - I haven't connected those two things before. Also i'm not sure if my glasses are too tight but my left ear aches often from wear my glasses sit. Did you get any others symptoms with your migraine apart from the headache? Did you wear the glasses all day? I will definately try that relaxation technique tonight.

I understand about the sight thing....I was legally blind until about a year ago. (Lasik) When I would get my migraines I would have pain usually behind my left ear, where my glasses would hit, and behind my eyes was very sensitive. Also I'm not sure if you know but caffeine will also trigger migraines or make them worse. When I get them I just take Excedrin Migraine, go somewhere quiet and relax. A nice warm bath with the lights off usually helps me. Or if you have someone to give you a shoulder/back massage does wonders. I hope this will help and hope you feel better soon.

Oh goodness, congrats on the eye surgery. This is so ironic, I saved up to have the laser surgery and then was told they could cause bad headaches so opted out and bought new glasses instead!!!!!! My GP prescribed me sumatriptan (maxalt) but they haven't helped, is that similar to your medication? Can't get an eye test for 2 weeks Sad

Thank you! Hmm.....well if it were me, I would get the surgery...I mean what's the worst that could happen if you are already getting the migraines? Who knows it might even help it. On top of that I can actually see the alarm clock in the middle of the night! LOL To me, it's one of the best things I have ever done. But that's totally up to you, I don't want to pressure you into it either.

Now on to the meds....I never took prescribed meds for the migraines, just over the counter...but my mom took Imitrex and many others that never really helped. Although she doesn't have them constantly just gets them a lot. So, I'm thinking try different meds, maybe one will work better than the other for you. shrug It could also be from the thyroid thing as well. Maybe the meds you are on for that. I'm not sure if they have anything to do with the other, but you never know. I really hope you find something that works. Let me know if you do.....I will talk more about it with my mom see if she has any suggestions as well.

Yeah that would be so amazing!!!! And be able to see the shower gel in th eshower - arrr heaven! I might save up and have it done. I've got an eye test booked for Weds now so don't have to wait too long. It's been very bad the last two days. And i'm working long hours so thats not helping. Ok yeah if you hear of any meds that might help. I think unfortunately though that I have a probable mis diagnosis at the mo. Migraines traditionally come and go don't they but my pain is constant, strange. Thanks again thanks

I just found this in another forum. I hope it helps if it is truly a migraine and not a misdiagnoses.....

"Eat a well-balanced diet, including protein with every meal. Avoid chewing gum; consuming ice cream, iced beverages, or salt; and guard against excessive sun exposure. Try eliminating foods containing tyramine and the amino acid phenylalanine.

We represent "Unauthorized Ad", an on-line company supplying customized vitamin supplements to the USA. We hope this information may be of interest to you.

Dr Balch's nutritional team has created a formula designed to help relieve headache. Antioxidants have also been included for maintaining a healthy nervous system. Calcium, working together with Magnesium, plays a key role in maintaining proper nerve function. L-Phenylalanine is involved in the biosynthesis of tyrosine and processes involving neurotransmitters. A deficiency of Pantothenic Acid may cause fatigue and headache. Pantothenic Acid is also a component of fat metabolism and assists in releasing energy from food sources. Vitamin C plays a role in the manufacture of neurotransmitters. Vitamin E
is a powerful antioxidant that may protect nerve cells against damage by free radicals. An active component of Feverfew is thought to control the inflammation that constricts the blood vessels in the head and prevents blood vessel spasms, which may contribute to headaches. Ginkgo Biloba helps maintain peripheral circulation to the brain. White Willow contains a chemical similar to aspirin. Preliminary research suggests that White Willow bark extracts have analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects.

Dr. Balch works with "Unauthorized Ad" to provide custom-made natural remedies for anyone who wants an all-in-one daily supplement that addresses all their health concerns, as well as providing the vitamins and minerals needed for optimum health and wellness. Hi all, I have been to see the opthalmologist. She thoroughly examined my eyes, looked at my glasses and noted a few things. Firstly I have a degree of astigmatism which I have never had diagnosed. Also she said my glasses were - -5.25 in the right eye and -4.5 in the left!!!! coverears She feels they are too strong. As you know I believed my px was a lot lower than this and my contact lenses are actually -3.75 and - 4.25 (completely different to my glasses).

I asked my normal opticians and they have said my px is -3.75 and -4.25 so either my glasses have been made wrong or my contact lenses are wrong. She said I have to go back in a week with my old glasses, contacts and px details from my original opticians. The thing is since my new glasses I haven't worn my contacts as much, maybe 3 x weekly, rather than daily. I think she is right saying my px is too strong, what are your thoughts?????? Rolling Eyes

I know, it's unbelievable. glance You expect you can trust health professionals but over the years I have been treated by some very incompetant people. I mean , even if it is not the whole problem (which I have a sneaking suspicion it is) it still won't have helped. All these months, you just think why didn't I do this sooner. I just hope it hasn't caused me permanent damage. Thanks for your support. I will keep you informed of how I get on with someone whoo actually knows what they're doing doctor rainbow

Hi , I have seen my doctor. I have to stop the gabapentin over ten days then start topiramate (another anti epileptic). He is going to write to my neurologist so I will probable have an appointment to see him in the new year. I expect then I will get an MRI. I can't see these new tablets working, if the other anti epileptics have failed?? He doesn't think it is my glasses or a cyst!! So I suppose I try these and wait, still going to my eye appt tomorrow but unsure whether to purchase new glasses! He just gave me a funny look when I said about my double vision aaah!
