Q: Chronic inflammation and mucous crystals
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 12th, 2008
I have these hard mucous crystals that come up from my throat from time to time and cause really bad breath. I can't seem to get rid of it. Some will come up but it seems as if there are more because the smell and taste is still there. This has just started happening in the last few months. I do take Zyrtec to try to slow the post nasal drip down but nothing seems to be working.
Is there something that I can take to get rid of it? I nees suggestions.

Thank you.

Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders Answer A4281
Current medical status: Chronic Post Nasal Drip -
Current medical treatment: Not taking anything except allergy pill.

Those “mucous crystals” are probably due to persistence of a chronic inflammation in the upper respiratory tract (nose, sinuses, pharynx and larynx). Chronic inflammation can be due to an infection that wasn’t treated properly, allergy, chronic toxic irritation (dust, gases…) or a combination of 2 or all 3 factors mentioned previously. Inborn or acquired anomalies of the upper respiratory tract (deviated nasal septum) can make the sinuses vulnerable to frequent infections.

You need to find out the exact reason for the chronic inflammation and treat it. You need an ENT-examination, nose and throat smear for microbiology, allergy tests and an X-ray of the sinuses.

In the mean time, you can use topical antiseptics and deodorants for gargling.
You may want to contact your primary health provider, first, about this.
