Q: Chronic diarrhea after bowels removed
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 10th, 2009
15 mth. ago i was operated on with severe pain in my right side. They suspected appendicitis but I told them i didnt have one but the operated anyway to see what was happening. They accidently cut my colon and I ended up with peritonitis so had 50% of both bowels removed. They also said I had gallstones but did not remove them. I suffer now fom chronic diareah. 7 weeks ago I had a gallstone attack and they removed my gallbladder and 22 gallstones plus fixed up the wound from previous operation due to it opening up. I am still suffering from pain in the centre of my upper chest and the skin is very sensitive. I also get pain in my right side still plus my bowel hasnt settled at all since the operation. Is this normal or is something not right??

I am sorry to hear of all of the complications that you have suffered so far. Unfortunately, because of the complexity of your previous surgical history, it is virtually impossible for me to link your symptoms with a specific cause (especially over the Internet).

I would advise that you consult a qualified General Surgeon (if you haven't already). A visit to a Gastroenterologist may also be in order.

I hope that one of these doctors can help you find an explanation, and effective treatment, for these disturbing symptoms.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Wascher, MD, FACS
