Hello, I have been very depressed for the past 7 months, mainly from my chronic constipation. I do, however, question the nature of my constipation. Am I really constipated? Constipation usually refers to infrequent bowel movements, but I drink sufficient, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, and seldom eat junk food. Technically, I usually do go everyday but it is NOT how it should be. Straining, longer and thinner stools, intense bloating and burping/belching (that’s how I get rid of the gas, it’s hard to fart). Not to mention that I developed some urinary hesitancy.

During May, I first experienced changes in my intestinal health. Quite unexpected, I went for a week without a bowel movement until I finally did with the intervention of laxatives and enemas. They were soft and thin, and sometimes would be a large and impacted stool. Now, they are just like the description above except they’re much smaller, much longer, and much dryer (nothing appear when wiping). Specifity? Commonly seen as small as my FINGER and sometimes thumb.

This is how it felt for the past seven months for which I was chronically “constipated”. I get frequent urges for bowel movements, but I can’t, because it just won’t come out. I have to strain very often yet expel very little. I can only have a BM when I strain and put my legs on the toilet to maximize anal width. I feel like there’s something that’s f---ing inhibiting (sorry for the language but I wanted to emphasize) or blocking colonic movement, at least partially. Most of the time, I feel pressure in the left abdomen. It could be gas or fecal matter. When I jog or engage in any rigorous activities, my left abdomen hurts like a really bad sore.

I rarely fart anymore and when I do, its either jet streams or small/large puffs of air. Since I became constipated, the most common and seemingly only way for me to expel gas was via my mouth, which is burping/belching. There are moments when I feel so much better after a nice burp and then it feels the same after a few seconds, i.e. 5-30 seconds. The worst part, however, is the increased time between the bacteria making the gas and the gas leaving my body. IT INCREASED GREATLY. Along with the pressure on my left side, the intense bloating makes everyday of my life miserable. My left abdomen feels so gassy and full. I have these bouts in which my belching gets out of control. Even before meals, I will have to burp. Recently in the morning, I’ve been waking up to intense pain in the left abdomen that goes away after a while. I think it’s trapped gas.

I went to a few doctors and a gastroenterologist but ultimately, they just reiterated the information I gained from the internet and prescribed me useless and common medication and laxatives.

I know it is impossible for anyone to provide a solution to a complicated problem that has been ongoing for a long time, but I am not asking anyone to do so. It just makes me feel better to tell others about current experience.

Chronic Constipation
Have you seen a Pelvic Floor Specialist? This is what they work with. They often work in tandem with a gastro. Mostly they are in the larger cities (I live near Chicago) at the university hospitals. The problem could be functional, ie., with disfunctional muscles in the rectal area. Worth a shot to look at.

I never heard of someone like that. But I was thinking of doing another abdominal x-ray. I did one during the first few works with normal results. Oh yea, I think that I forgot to mention I was male in the post. Sorry about that.

Thanks for you reply.

Constipation
Pelvic Floor Specialists deal primarily with Chronic Constipation, even more specifically than a Gastroenterologist. Doubt an xray will show anything. Too vague and too generalized, you need specific treatment.
