Q: cholecystectomy for gallstones ?

I've been diagnosed with gallstones about a year ago during a routine ultrasound when I had my appendix taken out. I'm scheduled for a cholecystectomy in a few days, but I'm not sure if it will benefit me. For the past year or so, I've been getting a dull ache in epigastric region 30-60 minutes after eating, which persists anywhere between 0.5-3 hours. Bigger meals/ "fattier" meals/ alcohol/ make the problem worse. There is no pain ever until after I eat my first meal, however by the time the pain from the first meal subsides I get hungry and am eating a second meal, so I feel pain for a good chunk of the day. I also get occasional mild bloating, and stay full forever if I eat a large meal.

I've also had endoscopy done and the gastro doctor said I have a hiatus hernia, and she also said I've got some fluid at the bottom of my stomach, but she didn't seem concerned by either finding, and told me that my symptoms were most likely caused by the gallbladder which is completly full of stones with no bile present. I'm 22, male, non-smoker if it makes any difference. Can anybody please help me out ??

Paul

I believe that surgical removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) would solve most of your digestive problems. especially the pain. There is no way you can dissolve those stones except to remove the whole gallbladder.

Thank you Smile. I was a bit discouraged by some of the horror stories, Especially since my symptoms are atypical, but every doctor seems sure cholecystectomy will help. I will be checking into hospital this Monday then.
I will post again once I recover to let you know how it went.

It's been 2 weeks since I had my gallbladder removed, and I thought I'd post an update. Hopefully people who need to get this done will see that it does not always end in horrible after effects, diahrea, or other bad symptoms of postcholecystectomy syndrome.

I was in hospital for a total of 5 days, I checked in monday, had the operation on tuesday and checked out friday. It turned out, during the operation, that I had extremely atypical anatomy and the operation lasted 2.5 hours. Despite complications, I had an excellent surgeon, who continued the surgery laparoscopicaly, even though by all rights he should have converted to an open procedure.

I slept most of the first 18 hours after the operation due to exaustion and painkillers. It was difficult to get out of bed first and I had considerable pain from my wounds only. Thankfully it turned out this was due to the 20-30cm drain tube they had in my liver. 90% of my pain was gone after they removed it 2 days post-op, and I could walk slowly.

As of right now my wounds look like small scratches and here's the best part......... ALL OF MY DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS ARE GONE headstand I feel young again at 22 Smile because the last year was hell in comparison. So far I've been able to eat anything without any problems but I haven't pushed it to the point of for example eating a whole pizza or topping up on beer at the pub ect.

They even gave me my gallstones as a souvenir. It turns out I had 33 gallstones the size of large marbles which filled 95-100% of my gallbladders volume. Doctors viewing the ultrasound said I had innumerable very small gallstones which turned out not be the case. My only regret is that I didn't get it done earlier Smile
