I'm going crazy! I do have mono, (diagnosed 1.5 months ago) my ears have ached for 4 months straight, and a CT scan only revealed a few lymph nodes that are just a little enlarged. My neck/throat feels like I'm being choked all the time, and it is hard to swallow my own saliva. It is easier when I drink or eat. But the constat feeling that hands are choking my entire neck/throat is horrible. Anyone ever had this????

You're not alone
I was first diagnosed with the dreaded infection MONO back in 07, i had 3 different flare ups, with the last one not being the typical sore throat but instead involving my throat to swell to almost twice its normal size. I am a female, but looked as though i actually had a protruding adam's apple like an adult male would. after a few months the symptoms began to dissipate, but last may (in 2008), i start developing trouble breathing and this horrible sensation that i was being choked all the time. the choking symptoms now come and go but are still horrible to deal with. I'll wear a low cut shirt, but still claw at my neck constantly thinking its riding up and choking me, even though it's obviously not. I had gone to an allergist (more so for the breathing difficulties) who sent me to an ENT and a pulmonary doctor. All the tests came back perfectly fine, even my allergy tests, so I'm still at a loss as to where this tightness is coming from. My mom suspected it might be from me having mono, but i've never heard of this happening to anyone before, so I'm at a loss.

Also, with your throat as sensitive as it is, if you touch it further down, like a little above that indented dip where your neck meets your clavicals, if you touch around that area do you start physically gagging? for me its like sticking my finger down my throat, only this is an external cause.

sigh, this needs to go away. =(

I've had the same feeling since developing major cardiac arrhythmias 2.5 years ago. I feel like I'm being strangled and it feels like there is less blood flow to my head making it feel like my head is heavier but the choking sensation is terrible! I'm always pulling at my shirt even though it doesn't help and it isn't the causing the feeling. It also feels like 2 fingers being pushed into the indent between the clavicles. Swallowing food isn't a problem either. The past 2 weeks I've even had 'coughing attacks' when this strangulation feeling is at its worse.
I asked my doctor the other day because it felt like my throat was swollen where the thyroid is but the day he checked it wasn't swollen and he figured it could be acid reflux. It isn't and I've never even had heartburn and I certainly don't have problems eating anything and everything.
Anyone else have an idea?

Tight and swollen neck
Did you ever get an answer to your problem? I am having similar things happen to me. I am ok lying down but as soon as I get up my throat begins to tighten and my face is bright red. I can't breathe out of my nose eihter and have a feeling of pressure behind my ears. It starts to feel easier after an hour or so - face is less red and swollen and can begin to breathe through nose. I am also breathless when this happens. Please let me know what the outcome was with you.

Choking feeling
I was dx with a cyst on my brain stem. I have 8 cranial nerves entwined in the cyst. Since the cyst hemmoraged last yr I have had the choking feeling almost daily. Some days are worse than others. My surgeon said the choking sensation comes from the pressure the cyst puts on a nerve. Maybe for those who can not get a diagnosis, you could look at the cranial nerves. There are 12 total. A MRI found my cyst.

Toight neck and getting out of breath
Just read your post today. When my neck and face was swelling my face looked really red and puffy but swallowing food was not a problem either. This problem, which scared me as I was so out of breath, has gone away at present. Have seen 3 GP's - first said (when it had gone first time I had it) it was probably a virus, second had no idea and third said maybe an allergy, but wasn't sure because it disappeard when I lay down flat.
I have now had full blood coundt/ thyroid blood test - bot of which were normal. Last week I had a scan of chest and lungs (OK) and ultra sound which showed a slightly large thyroid and also I have node which is 9mm big. The doctor is sending me for a further appointment at ENT this week. At the moment, I feel fine. I took note particularly as you mentioned arrhymia - I actually rang Papworth Hospital to ask if anyone had this happpen to them because I have arrithymia and two years ago I had an ICD fitted. The nurse had never heard of these symptons in cannection to arrithymia/ICD. \

Sensation of choking, constantly
So far, I have gone to an ENT, an Internist, and an Endocrinologist. They have found a nodule (not big) and I was told it's because I'm fat. HA! Then he looked up my lab work and decided I need to have a biopsy done on my thyroid. All my tests have been fine except for the fact that my body is not holding vitamin D. I take fish oil, I work outside all day and I take vitamin D supplements. I still say it has something to do with the thyroid. At first, mine was swelling and going down. It constantly feels like I'm choking. I also have allergies and a post nasal drip, but this is completely different. I go back to the EMT on Monday. He seems like he at least wants to get to the bottom of this. I've been battling this for 2 years. I wakes me up at night when I put my chin by my chest. THAT IS THE WORSE PART. It scares me. I'm hoping the ENT finds something. I'll be looking for new doctors because this is ridiculous. My dentist told me about the ENT that I am going to now. This was after I went to a different one and was told it was probably TMJ. I don't even grind my teeth. If I find out what it is, I'll keep you posted!

I have the same symptoms you described above (always feeling like someone is choking me). You mentioned you were going back to the EMT. What have you found out?

Sore Throat/choking sensation
To those with questions...see a chiropractor. I had/have (need another visit)similiar issues and went to the chiro. He showed me on x-ray where my neck bone is straight instead of curving (creating an Adams apple). Once he aligned me (several visits) I was much better. I am making an appt. on Friday to get re-aligned. Hope this helps...

throat strangling sensation
I have had the same thing for several months. If I tuck my chin down or look up like I am gargling it will send me into coughing fits. I never had this problem until I had a terrible virus that was most likely pertussis-whooping cough. Coughed so bad I broke a rib. Now all my tests are normal, have seen MD, allergist, ENT, ect. I am hypothyoid but labs are normal. I frequently feel like I am being strangled. I started to feel better a few weeks ago but now it's getting worse again. No explanation but I never ever had anything like this before in my life and nothing seems to help. Sometime I still starts to lose my voice.

Just started having this same "choking" or pressure feeling at the base of my throat, also pressure around my ear on right side. w/o looking at anything my Dr. put me on antibiodics to rule out infection. symptoms started 7 days ago. If I do not feel better in a few days its off to the Dr. for me, I was hoping for answers though its not looking like Ill get them anytime soon

How to survive a living hell!?! HELP!!
I am experiencing a lot of similar symptoms to you all!I have had a tonsillectomy/turbinate reduction surgery to try and rectify these problems, to no avail. ENT's are useless as are GP's! I do not believe that globus pharynges is real, I do not suffer from anxiety and if I might seem anxious on presentation in the ENT's/GP's office, it is solely because I feel as though I am being suffocated all the time along with other seriously annoying and totally debilitating symptoms! AND....for the fact that there does not seem to be a cure! I have been suffering with this condition for years! I am not a hypochondriac and I am sick of being treated like one! My GP considers that GERD is the issue however, I feel as though it may be....the big C?!? I am at my wits end!

Please read on...

I am a 28 year old female, my weight is steady/normal, I am slim, I eat a healthy enough diet. When I was younger I drank alcohol a bit (however, not to a level that I would consider to be excessive).

My diet is as follows:

Routine

Zinc, Vitamin C, Echinacea supplements x1 per day (on the ENT's advice) to help build my enzymes for cellular function and overall health
Vitamin E supplement x2 per day - for stomach
Golden Seal supplements x3 per day - to aid digestion
Food breakfast weetbix, lunch salad, dinner chicken + rice
Drinking lots of water

Presenting symptoms:

Always clearing throat/excessive swallowing
Sore throats with painful swallowing (intermittent)
Difficulty swallowing
Excessive saliva (foaming of saliva)
Sensation of lump in throat (top of throat a feeling of being strangled at top of throat) and sensation of lump in throat in the Adams apple area (however, cannot physically feel a lump with fingers)
Constant bad breath throughout the day smells like faecal matter
Yellow coated tongue
Tonsil crypt on left hand side of throat
Lethargic/fatigued - constant
Hoarseness in voice/voicebox trashed
Red sore eyes (sunburnt feeling) constant
Acid reflux
Slimy film inside of mouth/slimy coated teeth-enamel wearing away on front teeth
Chills always feeling cold - constant
Sleep apnoea
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction - clicking of jaw on left hand side

Possible Remedy...

Removal of lingual tonsils and revision palatine tonsils?
Barium swallow?
MRI/CT Scan/Ultrasound of neck - I have been begging GP's for this, however, have been advised an ENT must provide this on further investigation (I've been back and forth to ENT's for 2 years and this has not been recommended as I am assuming, they do not even suspect abnormalities/cancer following several endoscopies). I will see my ENT in two weeks and will try to request this but I suspect he will just say no...
Referral to Gastroenterologist?
Allergy testing?

Have previously taken:

Zantac and Nexium for Acid Reflux
Amoxicillin
Augmentin due forte
Nasonex
Thrush medication for yellow coated tongue
Saline solutions
Have been tested for nutrient deficiencies- vitamin deficiencies/minerals (Vitamin D, B12 & folate, zinc, magnesium, iron) & thyroid (blood and urine tests), am awaiting test results yet suspect they will be normal
Have seen dentist recently, teeth and gums are healthy

If anyone out there can shed some light on the matter (i.e. provide me with some answers!), I would be most grateful! I sympathise with all of you fellow sufferers! How to survive a living hell!?! HELP!!
