Q: Chlamydia dormancy with no symptoms

I have a quick question:

One of my girlfriends high school friends was diagnosed recently with chlamydia, but she never knew she had it. As a result it went untreated until it was too late, and she is now sterile. This situation got me thinking however.

I had unprotected sex (she was on the pill) almost 5 and a half years ago now with my ex-girlfriend. After I broke up with her it was almost 18months until I had sex again with my current girlfriend.

I have never had any signs or symptoms of chlamydia, but this recent debacle with my girlfriends friend got me thinking. Is there any way I could have had chlamydia from my ex girlfriend, and not known about it, and not shown any symptoms or signs for 5 and a half years?

I have read a bit about the topic, and it appears the longest a male has gone without showing any symptoms whilst having the infection was 1.5years. Can anyone shed any light on this or am I just being paranoid (better to be safe than sorry I suppose). I have organised an appointment with my local GP to chat about this and have tests done, but I thought'd I'd also see what the consensus was on here.

Thanks in advance.

chlamydia symptom-less period
I asked my GP today, having been given a diagnosis of Chlamydia by him, how long the infection could be 'dormant' ie not show symptoms. He said it varied but probably more than a year was possible (i had a different boyfriend last year) That said, 5.5 years seems like a long time. I would call the GU clinic in your area if you don't get an answer here. I hope you do!
