Q: Chest pain and swollen lymph glands

I have a very very very complicated long medical history. So, I'm going to shorten this down to the basics.

For about 3 years I've had a sharp stabbing pain in my chest that comes and goes. It does happen a lot when I breath deep (such as pleurisy). I've had numerous CT scans that shows a small nodule in the LLL, but since it's never changed size, they've determined that it's not cancerous (the last CT scan was about 1 - 1 1/2 years ago). They did say that I have a ground glass affect with bronchietasis and emphysema though. I'm a 41 year old female smoker. I also had a PET scan about 1 - 1 1/2 years ago that didn't show any cancer.

So anyway, for the past 3-4 weeks I've had a good-sized swelled lymph gland on the left side of my neck. Some days it seems more prominent than other days (but I don't think the size actually changes). It doesn't hurt whatsoever. No sore throat. No fever. No aches or pains (except for the occasional lung pain as mentioned above). I have, however, for the past year, felt like something is in my throat (on and off). I'm constantly swollowing. I did see an ENT about a year ago when this first started, and she took a quick looksy down my throat, but she didn't see anything except for it was (quote) "extremely red".....She was really surprised that it didn't hurt (but it didn't).

Anyway, what do you think??? Should I go to the doctor, or should I just wait to see if the gland swelling goes down??? If I do need to see a doctor, should I see my Internal Medicine doctor, or an ENT??? Question

Thanks,

Risinghigh

you should have an ultrasound done. this will be able to tell you if the lump is truely a lymph node and whether is has characteristics of a benign lesion or if biopsy is warranted. at this time they should also check your thyroid. fullness in the nexk or throat and swallowing issues can sometimes be caused by the thyroid

x0x011, thanks for your response!!

Since my last post, I've been to see my Internist. He said the lump/mass on my left neck wasn't a swollen lymph node, but instead my carotid artery was enlarged (pulsitile). He did order an ultrasound, but unfortunately there wasn't any available appointments for 3 weeks. My doctor wrote on the ultrasound order "enlarged/dominant carotid artery vs. mass." So anyway, now I'm just in a wait and worry mode. Also since seeing my doctor, I've had a severe headache for 3 days in a row (which is rare for me .... I usually never get headaches). I've also been having a lot of the sharp stabbing pains in my chest that I mentioned in my previous post. I'm truly getting a little concerned here .... But like I said, I just have to WAIT AND WORRY!!! Sad
