Q: Chemo after colon cancer surgery ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 25th, 2009
My mum had Colon cancer 3 yrs back and had an operation. All went fine
Did chemo for 6month and checkup every 6months
3 month back she found blood in stool and had a checkup where she has been told she got back the cancer and operated again and now she’s wearing the waste bag after the operation
During the operation doctor found that the cancer had spread all around and they had removed the uterus and part of the big intestine, she nearly didn’t survived.
She had the operation for 5hours then transfer to ICU and within 20minutes back again to the operation theater for 1 ½ hours more as she was not clotting blood.
She has been told by doctor that she need to do chemo and she doesn’t want to do it.
Advice on my decision as doctor says they had remove all the cancer and that she don't feel like going to the process of chemo.

It is not possible to provide specific medical advice over the internet, and your mother's cancer history is quite complex on top of it. In general, however, if her colon cancer has returned and "spread all around," then surgery alone is very unlikely to remove all microscopic traces of her recurrent cancer. Based upon the information that you have provided, I would agree with her oncologists that the best chance to prolong her life is with additional chemotherapy.
