I have sensitive skin. I have to be careful about what soaps I use, can't use any medicated lotions or soaps because they burn my skin. However, I'm African- American and have the thickest, curliest hair in the world. If I don't get a relaxer/straightener every month or so I can't do anything with my hair and it begins to break off. Each time I relax my hair, no matter how gentle the product claims to be, I get burns/scabs all over my head. I've even been using children's relaxers for the last six months because they are supposed to be more gentle. I found one relaxer for sensitive skin and it still burned me really badly. Basically, my scalp has barely healed up before it's time to relax my hair again. ( I relax it every 30 days- 6 weeks.)
My concern is that a friend, who is a dr. said that I shouldn't relax my hair anymore because the chemicals damage my hair follicles. I certainly don't want to go bald but I don't want to stop relaxing my hair either. Any suggestions?

Here's a diagram of the skin. I'd suggest that you see a dermatologist to learn the facts about your hair and to have your scalp examined. I'm not sure that you can rely on your friend's opinion. Do you see how deep the roots are in relation to the hair?
