Q: Checking for pregnancy before treating back pain with medication
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 4th, 2009
OK, so i don't won't to waste anymore money on pregnancy tests, or a trip to the doctors. But I haven't had my period in over a month, and it's a little scary. My last period started on March 22nd and ended on the 26th. I had sex on the 31st of March. I usually get my period from the 20th to the 25th. and it is May 4th, so yea, i'm not sure. I haven't been stressed at all.But i have been having major mood swings, i've had a very very low temper, haven't been depressed at all though, just easily angered, and normally i'm a very happy person. The symptoms i've had are tender breasts but that was the first 2 weeks of april, not so much anymore, same time my breasts were tender,i had a couple unusual cravings.I've been feeling very tired lately, but i do work about 35 hours a week and have insomnia. But the past week or so i've been staying awake a lot later than normal.I've had back problems for the past couple years, but it's been nonstop backpain for the past 2-3 weeks. So can you please help?

It is possible that the symptoms you reported (tender breasts, pelvic cravings, mood swings, and insomnia) might be related to pregnancy, but are not considered to be certain signs of pregnancy. They might be related to any other condition that involves sex hormonal alteration. The back pain might be a completely separated issue caused by spine disorders, increased muscle tension, or bad posture.

You might want to visit your gynecologist to check for pregnancy or wait a little longer for your period. If you miss it for two months, you might schedule an appointment to check for any reason that might cause hormonal changes.

As for the back pain, it may be best that you do not take any medications until you rule out pregnancy. Applying heat might help reduce the muscle tension and the pain.
