I am a retired Hospice and ICU RN and have a 97 yr. old mother with end-stage Alz. in a nursing home. She has been declining for months - recent 12 lb. weight loss, almost incoherent, etc. 2 1/2 wks. ago she developed pneumonia and since then has been rousable but basically somnolent, taking in just sips of water, a few spoonfuls of yogurt. The pneumonia seems to have gone away after treatment though her O2 Sats are still around 93 with O2. We put her on comfort measures only and her Celexa and Aricept were DCed about a wk. ago. We were keeping a vigil at her bedside. Today, she was suddenly restless, very wide awake, showing bizarre symptoms - making funny noises and then laughing, babbling frequently and smiling to herself. She did make some eye contact, but for the first time she didn't seem to know who I was. She seems to have decreased motor control of her hands. She appeared "wired"! I have never seen this and can't figure it out. Any thoughts appreciated.

According to your description, your mother's condition is probably getting worse which can be expected in case of Alzheimer disease. Beside the progressive decreasing of the brain functions, such patients are especially vulnerable to lower respiratory infections.
