Q: Chances of being infected ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 27th, 2009
Dear Doctor,

I am doing my thesis on hiv/aids research and have searched many sites online for information. I have a couple of questions that I would like to have an actual doctor answer, if possible and thanks in advance.

1. Is it true that the chances of being infected after one-time unprotected sexual intercourse is very unlikely?(Do you have actual statistics for this?)

2. How long does hiv take to progress to aids?

3. When a person starts to show hiv symptoms after being infected for "several years", what symptoms are typical?

Thank you,

Christine

HIV and AIDS Answer A5917

1. Receptive penile-vaginal intercourse-10 transmissions in 10000 cases
Insertive penile-vaginal intercourse-5 transmissions in 10000 cases
These results are much less than blood transfusion transmission, but can happen at the estimated rate.
2. Without treatment, about 9 out of every 10 persons with HIV will progress to AIDS after 10-15 years. Many progress much sooner.
3. There are no typical symptoms. AIDS infection is suspected if so called opportunistic infections appear more than usual. An opportunistic infection is an infection caused by pathogens only if the immune system is compromised. The set of symptoms varies for each pathogen. Detecting some of the opportunistic pathogens as cause for the infection is usually enough to rise suspicion for probable HIV infection.
