Hi, I have just started taking Champix to help me quit smoking, I am on my fourth day, I was just wondering how effective this is and how long it will take to kick in.
I was told that it will start to make my cigarette taste horrible and i will smoke less before finally quitting, how long does it take for the cigarettes to start tasting awful.

My mother in law was a smoker for 40 years. Quit after 2 weeks of being on it. She changed her whole life.

I quit using Champix
I had also tried quitting many many times - with no luck, and while trying previously, I have to say, all I could think about was having a smoke. This did not happen with Champix. I have been a smoker for 30 years,20 to 50 smokes a day, and tried many methods to quit. Usually after trying to quit, I would only end up taking it back up, and smoke more than I previously had.

This I have found to be the easiest, I quite often feel like I have cheated some how, that it coudnt be this easy. Other than a few light cravings and a bit of tiredness in the first two weeks, I have had no side effects. After day 14 I just quit. I really didnt feel like smoking any more. I am still on the program, into week 4 and I am now a non smoker.

I would like to mention that I did this while my partner still smoked around me.

My personal feeling is that you have to want to quit for yourself, and not for what others want or say.

Anyway, I would also recommend that you at least give it a shot. I did because I had another friend who was a heavy smoker like me, and had been smoke free for three months at that time, and she still is.

Good luck to you all.

day 14
I am on my 14th day of taking Champix and my quit date was three days ago. I went to see my doctor the day before my quit date and said I didn't think it was working on me because I was still smoking and they didn't taste bad, although I will say that I would sometimes forget to smoke. But I kept my quit date and haven't smoked in 3 days. You will be surprised; you just have to pick your quit date and stick to it. You won't realize the effect Champix has on you and your ability to say no to a cigarette until you stop smoking. That was my experience with it...I was expecting a big moment when I didn't feel like smoking but it wasn't like that. You still need willpower!

I quit on day 16 of taking Champix. The cigarettes never started tasting bad I just finally stopped waiting for that "moment" like Norma7 posted above and put them down. I still had cravings but they were much more easy to cope with. No tears, no anger or frustration ... I quite May 22, 2008. I took Champix for the full 12 weeks. I did have nausea in the morning and found drinking water like they recommend actually made it worse. If I ate something like a few crackers the nausea stopped. It would only last 1/2hr or so anyway. I have friends that smoke, I have been drunk with smokers and truly don't feel the urge to go back to that habit.

I would recommend though making sure family and friends know you are taking the drug because I believe the warnings and that you need to be careful. Have them keep an eye on you and their support will help you also! I have a history of depression and take Zoloft daily. Taking the Champix did not interfer with my meds nor did I have any depressive episodes during my quit. Smile

Good luck!!

Champix Isn't Working :-(
I am now on day 14 of Champix and still smoking. My cigarettes dont taste horrible - in fact I feel no different from day one. I am back at my doctors today for a repeat prescription. When will the tablets kick in. I smoke around 30 cigarettes a day. Can you stop smoking after the 8 - 14 day interval. I have tried everything to quit. hypnosis. accupuncture,...tried willpower...nicotine patches, inhalator and gum.

I really hoped this would be the miracle drug everyone talks about - but so far I'm typing this and all I can think about is having a cigarette!

H E L P!!!!

Thanks

Champix
I started smoking when I was 15. Just after my 43 birthday, on January 30, 2009, I started using Champix and set my quit day for February 7, 2009. I woke up that morning and didn't smoke. I haven't smoked since, today is August 17, 2009. Champix works. Set your quit day and stop that day. I have tried everything on the market, absolutely everything, and unlike Champix, nothing worked. I also have parents and people around me that smoke and surprisingly it does not bother me. I actually still enjoy the smell. Yes its weird. I took Champix for 10 weeks. Best decision I have ever made. Do not doubt Champix. Keep trying!

Some help to stop smoking
I have been taking Champix for about 3 weeks now. Apart from some nausea, I seem to have no side effects.

In my opinion, and I am very sorry to hear of those deaths mentioned in other places, smokers use the habit as a crutch indicating possible underlying and perhaps mild psychosis. It could be that the people who have attributed this drug to depression had the feelings of depression prior to commencing Champix. The actual event of ceasing smoking after many years can be a bit depressing itself but that feeling passes as I have found when I have stopped smoking in the past - once for 4 years.

Now I have stopped smoking 30 cigarettes daily after many years and apart from the nausea occasionally, I feel much better than I did before. I know what it is like to stop but all I wish is that those who are determined will feel better about it and expect to be slightly down to begin. I suppose we smokers who are stopping feel a sense of loss but that does not last. It is good to be confident and to trust that any prescribed medication might help rather than being pessimistic.

There is no magic pill that will cure the craving completely. Unless one uses Will Power in conjunction with medication, it will not work.

I have been on Champix for about 2 1/2 weeks. My doctor told me to keep smoking and that on the 16th day I would not smoke any more. Well that didn't work and I am still smoking. I still have cravings and if I drink I smoke more still. I must say that when I am at work I forget about smoking and before I counted the time I could go and have a smoke at about 11am. I don't have one until lunchtime. Then I smoke 2. I am now smoking about 10 to 12 a day and before I smoked about 17 a day or more on weekends. I am still waiting for the cravings to go. Am I doing something wrong??
