Have you tested positive for the human papilloma virus (HPV)? Has your Gynecologist recommended surgical removal of a portion of your cervix?
Currently, nearly all cases of cervical cancer are thought to be caused by HPV. Once chronic HPV infection of the cervix has been acquired, there is, unfortunately, no way to eradicate the virus. Careful vigilance on the part of your Gynecologists, and a low threshold to intervene if high-grade dysplasia or early cervical cancer arises, are the best options at the present time.
Sincerely,
Robert A. Wascher, MD, FACS
