Q: Causes of varicocele
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 18th, 2009
For the past few weeks, I have been experiencing a dull pain in the underside of my penis where it meets my body each time I ejaculate. There is a hard spot in the same location that I experience the pain, and the pain some times radiates from the base to the glans of my penis. It seems like there is resistance preventing the release of semen from occurring. It takes longer for the semen to actually be expelled from my penis, and it occurs with less force then normal. I saw a urologist a week prior to when the pain, and he said that I have a varicocele. I am reluctant to go back and see him after such a short amount of time. Could the pain be related to his diagnosis?

Current medical status: Ultrasound and physical exam to diagnose varicocele two weeks ago
Current medical treatment: Advair twice daily for asthma

Varicocele is an abnormal enlargement of the veins that drain the testicles. In certain cases it might be caused by compression of the vein by a nearby structure. On the other hand, the pain you feel might be related to a structure that compresses a nerve in the area. You might want to schedule a follow-up with your urologist to check if anything in the genital area is causing both the pain and the varicocele due to compression.
