Any type of major damage to the tissue might cause residual fibrosis. If the damage is minimal, there is a possibility that the damaged cells will be completely replaced with new ones. But, if the damage is bigger, the cells might be replaced with fibrous cells. The cause of the damage may differ: trauma from an external source or a disease that damaged the tissue (inflammation being the most frequent). A skin scar is one of the simplest examples of residual fibrosis. However, in medical terms, it is more commonly used with major tissue damage of internal organs.
