Q: Causes of pain in stomach area
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 16th, 2009
My partner is 31 years old. Lately he is unable to eat much because he has alot of pain in his stomach. Now & then after he eats a lump will apppear to one side just above his tummy - it's probably more of a bump which you can actually see & feel. When he uses the toilet there is often food in his stools - lettuce, peas..... This is causing him alot of probs & he has been unable to eat breakfast for about 5 days now & often is unable to eat in the day because it causes or makes the pain worse! He went to the doc 2 weeks ago & came back with fybogel (sp?) this is for constipation. We don't think it is an intolerence to wheat or dairy because he could go 2 days without it & still gets a prob, it's like eating food in general causes a problem.
Can anyone help please?
Thanks

The pain in the stomach area with a bump-like thing appearing, as you mention, can be due to severe acidity, ulcers in the stomach, or irritable bowel disease. Since food particles like lettuce, peas, etc., are coming out undigested there is likely a problem in the upper gut, either the stomach or the small intestine. It could also be a malabsorption syndrome which can be seen in intestinal tuberculosis, HIV, tropical sprue, parasites in the stool and Whipple’s Disease.

A confirmed diagnosis cannot be made over the internet, nor is it possible to prescribe a treatment. Discuss these possibilities with your doctor and you may need to consult a gastroenterologist for this.
Hope this helps. Take care!
