My blood platelet count rose over a year from 600 to 1200. I am now taking
one capsule of hydroxyurea 500mg daily and it is down to 650.

What are the causes?

The drug you use is antineoplastic medicine, inhibiting the process of uncontrolled production of certain cells, which is feature of cancerous cells (neoplastic cells).
One of its treatment indication is condition known as essential thrombocytosis, a chronic blood disorder, when platelets are overproduced in bone marrow because of unknown reason.
In your case, this drug suppresses the platelets production.
