Q: Causes of a knot in front of the tailbone
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 7th, 2008
I have a painful knot on the left side of the muscle right in front of my tailbone. It's a sharp pain that especially hurts when I sit down or put pressure on it. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

According to the major symptom you described (a painful knot in front of the tailbone), you might be experiencing an ingrown hair. If pressure is applied the knot would hurt. The skin over the knot might be red, indicating that inflammation has occurred. Other less likely causes include: a fistula in the genital area, an abscess originating from another inflammation, and a fracture of the tailbone. The last is not probable if a fracture has not occurred.
