Numbness in fingers might be from several possible causes. Neural damage might cause numbness in fingers due to long term damage to the nerves. It is important to know that the sensory part of the nerves is usually first affected, and therefore the sensory symptoms are usually the ones that are first recognized. The numbness might be sometimes accompanied with tingling sensations which have the same cause. The neural damage might be caused by physical trauma.

Lack of blood supply due to bad local circulation might cause numbness in the fingers. The advanced atherosclerosis might be a reason for this condition, and it might on the other hand be caused by chronic diseases like diabetes, for example.

As you may see, the numbness in the fingers might be caused by several different reasons, which have to be examined depending on the intensity of the numbness and lasting (minutes, hours).

A neurologist might need to examine the affected person to check for any neural damage and to see if the numbness is only temporary without any permanent damage done to the nerves.
