Q: Cause of floating stool
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 5th, 2009
Hello doctors,

I've been trying to solve my problem for quite some time now. I've seen a couple of different GI doctors, but no success. They have suggested it be a muscle, compaction, or a nerve problem, but after clicking around on the internet I came to a realization. My stool floats more than not at least from what I can think of. I have not been paying attention to whether it floats or not until two days ago. I'm sorry for the disgusting visual. But with it floating means that I have a mal-absorption of fat problem most likely. I just need to find out whats causing it.

I don't have any symptoms other than some leakage after I go #2, gas and some bloating. I was thinking it might be caused by parasites. It seems like it'd fit the mold. I worked construction for 2 years straight and had to use honey buckets every day, worked in the dirt, or could have gotten it from foods. I like rare steak (not anymore). If you have any input as to what could be causing it I'd be grateful. Thanks

A simple stool test for unabsorbed fats can answer the question regarding possible fat malabsorption. Given your history, your doctor should also order stools studies for parasites ("ova and parasites"). Finally, lactose deficiency should be considered. If these tests fail to provide a diagnosis, and your symptoms persist, then you might consider a consultation with a gastroenterologist.
