Q: cause of chest pain ?

Hello Everyone. I have been worried the past couple of weeks, and have been losing sleep over it the past few days. I have recently been having sharp pains on the right and left side of my chest, it doesn't last for long and doesn't happen all that much throughout the day, but its still something to worry about. I am to scared to go to the doctors to find out the truth and I would rather just find a way where I could reduce the risk which I have started taking some precautions as of late. The pains occur under my pectorals, but I know it has to do with I believe either my lungs or heart.

I have just turned 21. I do not drink often, usually on birthdays or celebrations, I am starting to drink red wine though because of these pains, supposedly it is good for the heart/circulation. I have also just recently quit smoking, which was as of 4/11/08, I have been smoking for an estimated 7 years.... About a pack every 2-3 days. I actually eat pretty healthy, other than pasta almost every other day. I don't eat a lot of red meat, don't eat as much grilled chicken as I should be, but I do eat a lot of greens/vegetables. I have also been drinking a lot of Orange Juice, Pomegrante Juice and Water, not much soda or Iced Tea. But I have been having some gas as of late, for example I will burp and it will actually make my chest feel better and I dont believe it is indigestion, but I still want to see what you all think about this. My height is 5'10" and I am 215 lbs. I am not obese, just a tab bit overweight for how my body is structured. I have been exercising but nothing in the mid area due to a car accident that I gotten into 2 years ago, which I have constant back, neck and spinal pain. So basically the only fat area I have is my stomach/abs and pectorals. I dont really feel tingling in my arms or legs anymore (this was due to nerve damage from the car accident), but sometimes when I do sleep I wake up and my arm will be asleep or tingling but I think thats just because of how my arm was rested. Very awkward!

Anyways, I am not sure if I am making much sense. This subject is very scary for me. My family history for health isn't bad.

My Grandfater had a Stroke. My Grandmothers had Diabetes. My father has high blood pressure and cholesterol I think and my mother is healthy. My father however has a short temper fuse, I however have a long fuse and usually get dont my blood pressure raised. But I can not say about Cholesterol since I am only 21. I do eat pizza, bacon, cheese, roast beef, and other things but only from time to time. So I was wondering, do you think the way how I am could I be at risk for heart disease? I am just scared because I am only 21, I know people who have had heart attacks in their young years, but I have Always been a healthy person. Rarely got sick, always ate greens/vegetables. However I don't eat garlic much, and I dont eat seafood. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Wish all of you the best of luck.

According to your age I don't expect for your chest pain to be due to some heart disorder. In young people like you It is usually due to muscle pain or stress. But to be sure you need to do physical examination and ECG at your GP.
Two more things:
1. You are overweight! You should watch your diet and try to do more physical activities. Good for you that stopped smoking.
2. Your family history is bad as far as cardio-vascular diseases are concerned. High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and stroke run in your family.
Have you ever checked your blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood glucose... at your GP?

I plan on trying to do more Physical Activities, but as of late with these pains I dont want and am scared to risk doing anything that would hurt it further. I will slowly get myself into doing more as the days pass.

I have checked my blood pressure in the past and it is very good, but never checked my Cholesterol, Triglycerides and Blood Glucose.. I have been thinking however that it might have to do with my lungs more as of late. Considering I was smoking for about 7 years, and just quit only a week ago, which I started to have these pains as of two weeks ago. I don't know... Reason why I need to get checked and stop worrying about being checked...

Is there any over the counter medications that I could take for now until I see my GP? I am so paranoid right now I was about to start taking Children Aspirin, but then again shouldn't be taking that without consenting my doc first. Even though I am allergic to nothing. Thank you though for everything so far! Best of luck to you.

There is nothing to be scare of if you perform some standard blood tests, physical examination and ECG at your primary health provider. You may be scared from the unknown but you will have to face it for once.
You don't need doctor's prescription to take aspirin whenever you feel some pain. Children's dose probably won't help you enough so you may take dose for adults - 500mg.

Thanks for all of the help you have given me over the past week. I went to the hospital yesterday because my primary care doctor is in another state. They gave me an X-Ray and a ECG. They said my Heart and Lungs are perfectly fine, and that it is most likely just muscle pain. So the doctor told me to start taking Ibuprofen, and to start relaxing a lot more. So I have been taking 2 200mg tablets every 8 hours or so with of course food or milk, which I can take them more often and a higher dosage (800mg) but ill stick with this dosage for now. I have been feeling better the past two days, I guess mainly because I now know whats going on for sure. And well because it has been a while since I started having these pains.

Over a period of time if I don't feel well I will return to the doctor and get blood work done, but until then I think I will be fine. I would like to see my primary doctor but I am not going to risk driving an hour and a half to see him with these pains and on medication. Thank you so much again Smile. You hit it on the nose Smile.

I am glad that you feel better. Ibuprofen obviously helps you and you probably don't need higher doses. Don't forget, to take Ibuprofen always on full stomach because it can irritate the stomach.
I also recommend you to relax more.

Yeah I am making sure I take it on a full stomach, I always eat before and after I take it, as well as drink 2 glasses of milk, just to be on the safe side.. I am relaxing more, and getting a lot more sleep then I have over the past week, just hope the pain goes away soon!

Take care and Thanks again!
