Q: cats and croup

I have a 20 month old son, suddenly he developed severe croup and was rushed to hospital. Emergancy operator told me to get rid of animals which are indoors. I have two cats is it possible that my son is allergic to cats and thats why he got croup.
I need to know as next month he will be staying at his paternal grandparents and they have about 7 cats!
