Q: cataract removal &/or artificial lens

I have posted in this forum previously regarding my 20 year old son having multiple surgeries to fix a detached retina. Well, now due to the surgeries he is scheduled to have cataract removal on 12/10/08. I would like any information anyone can give. My son states they are going to remove his lense and put in an artificial one in. I havent gone to all of the apt's with him, so havent been able to speak to the doctor about this.

If you have any info regarding cataract removal &/or artificial lense, I would sure appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks!!!!

I believe that your son is talking about an intraocular lens, commonly called an IOL. An IOL is a tiny artificial lens for the eye that permanently replaces the eye's natural lens when it is removed during cataract surgery. The success rate of cataract surgery with an IOL implant is excellent, resulting in improved vision in the majority of patients.

artificial lense
Thank you for your comment and information Rooted. I actually talked to a man today that has had this done, and he said the same thing you said. He says that he sees perfectly now! My son still has one more surgery to remove the silicone oil that is in front of the retina (to keep it in place), and then we will know the amount of vision he will have in that eye. We are hoping for good news.

Thanks again!!!
