I had SVT, supraventricular tachycardia, for several years in my teens, till I was 17 and had a cardiac ablation to fix the problem. I'm now 23 and have been on birth control for about 2 years now. I just met a girl at school who had SVT and a cardiac ablation as well and she said that her doctor does not recommend someone with a history of heart problems to be on birth control. Is that true? If I have a history of SVT, should I not be on birth control?

Birth control pills may be associated with increased levels of a protein linked to heart disease. That said, birth control dosage and use must be tailored to your specific type of heart problem. Some women with complex heart disease should not use oral contraceptive agents because the risk of blood clots increases.

Check it out with your doctor --- and your cardiologist.
