vertebrae fracture recovery ?

My boyfriend was in car accident two days
ago. He was thrown twenty feet from the
car and fractured his neck between the 6th
and 7th vertabrae. When he arrived at the
hospital he had no feeling from his
nipples down. He had surgery that night
to correct the fracture in his neck.
However, he has still not regained feeling
in his body. He can feel when someone
touches his feet and he toes will actually
reflex and twitch. I am wondering if any
one knows anyone who has been in a similar
situation that was able to regain feeling.
I am so scared he is going to be
paralized. He starts physio tomorrow. He
is young and fit and is determined to over
come it. Is that what make miracle cases?
THe ones where the patient is told that
he will never walk again but he does?
Anyone with any hope for us would be
greatly appreciated.

Feeling iin his feet and toes is a good
sign.
Many times what appears to be "paralysis"
is really being caused by swelling in the
spinal area and as the swelling goes down,
more and more feeling returns.
It is important that he gets physical
therapy, regardless of what he can and
can't feel because it will keep the
muscles from atrophying. In otherwords
keep them functioning and moving
properly.
Only time will tell how much movement and
feeling returns to his body.
The fact that he is young and fit does
have a tremendous affect on his recovery,
as does his attitude and determination as
well.
He needs all the support he can get and so
do you. Ask the hospital if there is
someone that you can talk with to deal
with your fears and keep your spirits up.
He may have a long tough road ahead of him
to get back on his feet, but with good
medical care and support, you will both
get through this.
Good luck and my prayers are with you and
your boyfriend.
and Please keep us posted on his progress
and on you as well.

Glad to give you some encouragement and be
supportive. As I said before, time will
tell all and it's only been a couple of
days. It could take quite a few weeks to
get full answers and maybe longer.
Please keep us posted and I will continue
prayers for both of you.

It's an excellent sign, sounds wonderful.
Hope his recovery continues to improve
every day.
It's wonderful also, that you are there to
support him all the way.

He is doing better. He has regained the
feeling throughout his entire body now!
But he still has no movement from his
chest down. He is able to control his
bowels though. He has been on a
ventilator this whole time and he just got
off of that today! And he is starting
eating tomorrow.

Sounds like good news to me. Slow, but
steady progress is good. The fact that he
has bowel control is an excellent sign
along with the removal of the vent
yesterday is wonderful news.
My prayers are with both of you, and
please continue to keep us updated on the
progress for both of you.
