I was wondering why cant my mom lose
weight? She is not a food addict, she eats
little and she do all the houseworks
(cleaning the house, gardening and etc).
She tried jogging and everything but it
seems not to work, when we went to the
doctor the doc will ask her to eat less
and exercise more. Problem is, like I
said, she already eat very little so this
advice is not very good.
So please help

Sometimes doctors can be pretty clueless.
Your mom might actually not be eating
enough. When you don't eat enough, your
body conserves more of it's stores because
it thinks that it won't be getting more.
Food actually metabolizes part of the fat
in your body and burns it. So eating
enough is crucial. She should see how
much she is eating....add up the calories
and see how much it is. Then you can see
if that's the problem.
Sometimes exercising the same routine all
the time can be something your body gets
used to as well, so she might want to
change it up or step it up or both.
Also, women over 30 tend to hold onto
weight more than younger women. I don't
know how old your mother is, but the
metabolism slows down after a certain age
and hormones also can make a few
problems.
If she is tried everything, she should
probably invest in a diet like Medifast or
the Nutri System. I have been on Medifast
twice (after each of a couple children of
mine were born) and I plan to go on it
again after I am no longer nursing. It
works using ketosis, which is the only
diet which has worked for me. Having
results is worth the money if you can stay
on it.

She sleeps around 10pm and usually wake up
at 6am.
The problem is (although its very sad),
when she jog, her knee will start feelin
pain due to her weight. Me and my Dad is
pretty clueless how to make her to lose
weight by exercising without straining her
knee.
If any of you all have any suggestions, it
is greatly appreciated.
mominashoe - thanks for the tip, I think I
tell her bout it cause sometime she eat
too little.
Currently me and my dad is thinking how to
get her to sweat more (as in exercising)
without straining her knee. Any tips?

She should start a non-impact exercise
regimen.... Water aerobics are the best
for people with injuries. She can also
try cycling: Using a recumbent bike is
easier on the knees too. If she still
likes the walking/jogging idea, she should
invest in an elliptical machine which
takes the pounding out of your step.
Once she does some of these things and
loses a little more weight, her knees
should get better, and she can try walking
and jogging like she does now.

Thanks, I got 2 bicycles at home, so she
can cycle the other one but before that
she must reduce some weight first cause
she say it feels uncomfortable on my bike
saddle.
She is shy at water aerobics so I guess
its either recumbent bike or elliptical
machine. What is elliptical machine
anyway?
Sorry I dont know much bout this machines

I would give a link, but that would be
advertising....just type elliptical
trainer in a google search and you should
come up with some links. Some of them are
pricey, so she might want to go try one
out first. She could try signing up at a
gym for just a month to see what she likes
best too. She might try the elliptical
for a week and then decide that a
recumbent bike is better.
I'm pretty shy at the water aerobics, too,
but if she joins a class of women her age,
I think she will find plenty of women who
are in the same situation as she is.

Thanks, hmm anyway she also has a problem
that even though she eats normal (a bit
more then she usually eat), she will gain
weight almost immediately.
Any ideas for this problem?

Yes, it's part of the "not eating enough"
problem. As soon as she starts eating
more, the body also stores this in
conservation for when she isn't eating
enough later.
Weight gain is actually very normal for
people who want to lose weight and go on a
diet plan, but haven't been eating enough.
It just takes a little while for the body
to find a balance.

Hi hun. I feel your mom's pain. I'm a slim
but only because I monitor every single
calorie that goes into my body, otherwise,
like your mom, I will gain weight very
quickly. I've found that a lot of it has
to do with genetics. Also, sometime we
don't feel like we are eating much but
once all the calories are tallied up it
turns out to be way more that anticipated.
I write down everything that I eat and
drink, especially because I drink wine
which has calories. When I started writing
everything down, I noticed that I was a
grazer, I nibbled on little things through
out the day, and all that nibbling adds
up! Your mom should not give up she just
needs to find something that works for
her, not a diet but a lifestyle change.
I've heard a lot of good things about
weight watchers, they teach you how to eat
healthy and not deprive yourself. I think
that it is so wonderful that you and your
Dad care so much about your Mom's health.
I wish y'all the best of luck!

thanks for the support, now I need to find
a way how to get my mom to be confident
that she can lose weight cause she told me
she gave up in losing weight.
She used to go to a gym class for 3 times
a week, but her weight didn come down. And
then when she go back to her hometown and
ate 1 meal a day, her weight increase so
she basically got bad experience with
exercising and is very disaapointed.

She will probably give up several times
before she has an "Ah ha!" moment. Unitll
then the best thing y'all can do is to
continue to support her and remind her
that y'all are there for her every step of
the way. Try incorporating more healthy
things into your family activities such
as...instead of watching a movie y'all
could go for a family walk or y'all could
learn a new sport together. Don't give up
on her, I know you won't because you sound
as though you really want the best for
her. Eating less is not the answere, its
eating right that works. Lots of fruits,
veggies, and whole grains are very
important. I'm a veggie gal, but if y'all
do eat meat make sure that its lean meat
rich in protien and not fat.

If her knee is in pain, she will need to
switch to the elliptical machines (no
thread mills or track for her). When one
is jogging/running, they are slamming 5-6
times their body weight in force on their
knees. Eventually in life, our joints
degrade and lose cushioning, so if her
knee hurts now at her age, I don't believe
it will change later on whether or not she
takes a break from running.
The elliptical looks somewhat like those
stationary bicycles, but she will be
standing and it has two grasps that will
allow her to mimic a jogging motion. She
will never have her feet off the "pedals",
so the stress on her knees will be
eliminated. As somebody suggested, water
arobics is a great exercise as well, us
young males pumping iron in the gym often
scorn these more "feminine" exercises like
pilates or water arobics, but to my
understanding water arobics is very very
difficult.
My question earlier about how much she
sleeps is no longer relevant seeing that
she sleeps an ample amount, I cannot say
as to why she is not losing weight.
Genetics only goes so far however, so that
is still a possibility.
How much does she weigh exactly? You
haven't mentioned that so for all I know,
she is 5'5 and 120 pounds, wanting to lose
weight despite that would be useless for
instance. How old is she?
Eating little is not the answer as others
have stated. 1 meal a day? low cal Diets
have a 90% or higher failure rate long
term for your health and weight.
Were you aware, metabolism decreases if
you eat less frequently? Instead of
starving herself (which she probably
doesn't notice cuz her body got used to
it), make her eat several small meal (5
meals instead of the usual 3)portions
throughout the day. Remember though,
instead of those 3 big meals, 5 small
ones, just enough to keep her satisfied
for the next few hours until the next
small meal. Yes it probably sounds like
she will be eating a lot, but I'll say
this a third time, SMALL meals. Increasing
the frequency of meals increases your
metabolism, but they don't control how
MUCH they eat during these meals, which is
why they gain the weight. So, small
frequent meals with exercise should help.
Make her use the elliptical or water
arobics, something cardiovascular related,
multijoint movement and NOT stressing on
her weight bearing joints (i.e. knees).

Mikolas is spot on about the meals, so
definetly get your mum to read that
and maybe pay attention to WHAT she's
eating rather than how much.
It doesn't sound like she's motivated at
the moment, so that's one problem you need
to deal with.
Get her to go for daily walks, if she
can't be bothered going to the gym., you
dont need high intensity to burn fat if
she can spare an hour or so of her day.
Maybe try some lower body exercises to
strengthen her quads + hamstrings, which
will also strengthen her knees which will
eventually enable her to run which imo is
the most effective way to burn fat

I see, thanks. I never realise food
portion could affect your diet that much.
Anyway thanks, soon Im going to get my
driving license and maybe I will take her
to the gym to exercise and I can use some
body building equipment.

Why can't she lose wt.? Almost certainly,
she does not expend enough energy to burn
more calories than she consumes. Most
people underestimate their typical daily
calories, and OVER-estimate their
expenditure. I've also often heard thrown
around, catchy phrases like "set point,"
e.g. "my body has reached its set point
and it can't be changed" etc. This is,
of course, baloney. True, if the body has
maintained a particular wt. for an
extended period of time, it will try to
continue to sustain it, at least
temporarily. But if calories are reduced
so that more calories are burned than
consumed, day after day, the weight WILL
COME OFF. I guarantee it. Tell Mom to
keep exact tabs on her calories eaten and
drunk every day for a while, with no
cheating. She just may find that she
takes in a good deal more than you/she
thinks.

She def needs a structured menu. I suggest
seeing a nutritionist (such as myself) or
a registered dietician which I can set you
up with if you so choose to go that route.
Let me know any way I can help you out I
have some pretty solid connections.
