I just started having the same thing
After getting my teeth bleached with zoom. I noticed the same symptoms. I am now a weak out and still in pain. It does come and go. Could it be something to do with teeth sensitivity?

I guess I'm not alone! I have been a secretary for 30 years and touching paper has never bothered me until just within the last month or two -- and it IS the same feeling as scratching your fingernails down a chalkboard -- and someone mentioned cloth on teeth -- yes -- it's that weird annoying feeling. I'm glad there are other people who have experienced this as misery likes company!

I can't touch paper without wanting to get sick
I am 22 and have this problem. I don't have any children. Touching paper, napkins, cardboard.. makes my teeth hurt and the best way I can describe this is nails on a chalk board... It drives me insane. I use lotion but it doesn't completely help, when my hands are dry, I clench them to create moisture. I use latex gloves to roll napkins at work.. my boyfriend joked that it was because I hate rolling napkins and that's all I've been doing for roughly 2 years.. but it's really starting to bother me.. the doctor I have spoken to says it could be an obsessive compulsion or a phobia.. but I'm not physically afraid.. but I can't stand the touch of paper.. putting disposable chopsticks in disposable napkines is the worst feeling, gloves or no gloves..

I am 33 and have had this same same issue for as long as I can remember. Lotion is the only thing that works for me and I sometimes mix it with baby oil to make it hydrate longer. Baby oil alone on my hands gives me a nails on the chalk board feeling. I can't even stand to hear my kids rub their hands together when they are dusty/dirty with sand especially. Sand on my feet and hands is almost unbearable.

hi! im from nyc and im 25/f. i have had this occur since I was a kid...after i wash my hands, my skin dries out very quickly and then if i touch a paper towel or a dry cloth, i get chills on my entire body...it also happens in the winter when my skin gets dry..just the thought of a dry towel, napkin, tissue etc can make me get chills...my hands dont look red but they feel sort of hot/bruning and very dry, even after using lotion...i do have a yeast sensitvity and very sensitive skin (acne and heat rash when its hot/humid) i think it has to do with nerves though because that is what allows the skin to "sense" things...i often have numbing in my hands and feet but i am in perfect health...who knows...probably something in the water itself!

Wet hands and young child
I have an 8 year old son that has been getting progressively worse with the problem of getting his hands wet. He loves swimming, but hates to wash his hands or take a bath or shower. He doesn't mind the rest of his body getting wet. He is at the point that he cries when he has to shower. He says when I blow dry his hands it helps a little. I do remember when he was born, he clenched his hands all the time. When I nursed him, I would try to open his fingers up and they were so tightly clenched. As soon as I worked them open the would quickly go back to being clenched. I always wondered about this because my three other children completely relaxed while nursing and they never had this problem. He is very intelligent and sensitive. I read about Dabrowski and overexcitabilities. I also was very stressed during my pregnancy and wonder if this had an effect. I would love to find a way to help him. Let me know if anyone finds out anything and I will do the same.

Same story here. The only thing that works for me is hand lotion, and it has to be "fast absorbing" or I get a "yucky" feeling... I used to apply it almost every hour when I was a kid but I'm now down to one big application in the morning right after I shower on both hands and feet, and sometimes I re-apply during the day when I wash my hands. I try to avoid most soaps... Most are too harsh for my sensitive skin. The best one is Dove!!! the liquid version.

Has anyoned ever herd of Sensory Processing Disorder? That's my only lead right now, and the one that makes the most sense... Except that from what I read... adults can't really be helped.

I went to a few doctors and they can't help... OCD was rulled out!!!

sensitive hands and feet
OHHH MYYYY GODDDDD!!!! i seriously cant belive this!! ALL my friends think im freakin crazy!! they think its funny! i didnt read all of these, but mine is a little different. its on my hands and feet, i HATE walking on carpet when my feet are wet, i have to walk carefully and not drag them on the floor. i get the same "nails on a chalkboard" feel too. but its not just cloth.. i cant touch my own skin!! and theres NO way i could ever rub my hands together! when theyre wet i keep my fingers spread apart and my feet in the ait as much as possible. i cant even see other people rub their hands together or i freak out. my mouth gets dry and i cant talk right, and if someone touches my hands or feet when wet i dont mean to but i really jump their case about it. my girlfriend had to learn to deal with it. she tried holding my hand in the pool and i flipped out haha kinda funny but i really hate living with this.. and it is not "atopic eczemajfkjah" or whatever lol it doesnt look gross like that sounds.. well other than being pruny and ugly. i dont think it has to do with having a baby concidering im a dude.. but anyways if anyone hears something please post it!! ive had this as long as i can remember and i want it to go away!

I am 31 and live in Colorado. I have noticed this a few times before and just blew it off. Today, however, is ridiculous. I feel like I have to keep my hand in the water. Taking them out and drying them makes me want to cry. I tried the whole lotion thing but I hate the feel of lotion so I end up rewashing my hands only to be right back in the same spot again. I wish I could find and answer. My husband thinks it is in my head and I can't get him to read any of the above. Please, someone know what this is and help us. Crys *

OMG I cannot believe that there are other people that have this. I have had it since I was a teenager, then I started taking birth control pills and it went away. However the birth control pills started causing me to have great pain in my joints after I had my second son so I stopped taking them. Now that terrible feeling is back, especially after I shower and then getting dressed is just torture. I have to wait until they get moistened for them to feel o.k. to touch anything anymore. I also think that it is hormonal, but I don't know how to fix it. Right now I am glad to take this pain over the other, but wouldn't it be wonderful if I could just not hurt anymore.

Finally!!
I'm so glad I came across this forum. I was going to go to the doctor but did not know how to explain the problem. I went a couple of years back to a doctor who virtually laughed at me and since then I have been too embarrassed to go again.
Is there any doctor in Australia who can understand this problem? We need a solution cause it can really destroy your sanity....

I am a boy, and I am 13 years old... I always have this after I take a shower. I new Some other people could have it, I mean if I have it some others could to. My mom told me a diagnoses but I am not sure what the name is, but the hairs on my arm give me goosebumps. Even reading your stories gave me goosebumps.

Dry hands
wow...I am NOT the only person who has this problem. I have to work around a lot of paper and go through tons of lotions! Half the time it doesn't work, hence why I am online to maybe find a solution. I thought I was just crazy. I can't stand the feel of paper, cardboard boxes are the worst, even hearing them sends chills up and down my spine. Washing my hands makes it even worse! I love to sketch and do all kinds of art, but I just can't...Sad
I seriously thought I was crazy..as did everyone else..

Ok...I posted in this forum a week ago, but by reading everyone comments..I really got to thinking..so now I have a temp solution.
I work in the medical field and wash my hands a hundred times a day and the lotion just was not working..not aloe based nada..in fact it got so bad a few days ago, I could not even touch anything. But I remember seeing the sortkwik on my friends desk and remember it's almost a waxy base..so I asked her for some. I have been using that plus my lotion and it really works! It allows me to go longer between putting lotion on...so try it. I carry this stuff everywhere with me.

Same here. It makes me feel so much better to know there are so many other people in the same situation. I always thought I was alone.

I just washed my hands after I used the bathroom a few minutes ago, and now I can't do my homework till it goes away.

I always want to carry it out too, just to get it over with, but then my feet/hands almost hurt for hours after. It takes forever to get over. I remember my mom used to laugh at me because I had to wear my winter gloves to read a book.

I also can't stand newspaper, cardboard, basically any wood product. Even on vacation, I can't step foot on a pier or dock without shoes on. The only wood I can handle is finished wood. Can you all stand it on your elbows/thighs/or anywhere else? The only spot I can't handle it are my hands and feet.

Me Too!!!
Wow!! This is amazing!! I really have always thought I was the only one with this. Here is my list of problem surfaces:
paper
suede
newspaper
clay pots
chalk/chalkboard
unfinished wood
microfiber
really just any smooth, dry surface

It definitely is worse after my hands get wet and lotion helps some, but not completely. I have to hold books with my knuckles, not fingertips. I can't even think about newspaper. I even get the chills when I see someone else touch these things. I have read a little about tactile sensitivity disorder, but have a hard time relating it to me because all the articles are about kids with that and pain. I am 42 and not in pain, just extreme, cringing, heebie jeebies - for lack of a better term. It is definitely a 'nails on chalkboard' feeling. I am hopeful about the above-mentioned hormonal or mineral deficiency possible causes because that might mean some relief. I have lived with this so long that I have learned to adapt somewhat, but if relief were available, it would be so great! When I tell people about this they tell me I am weird or wimpy or whatever. But,it seriously causes extreme physical discomfort and is very real!!!

I first noticed this when I was around 12-13 while doing dishes. The mat underneath my bare feet made my teeth irritated and it only happened with wet hands. I'm 26 now (male) and still have the same irritation. If I chew on ice or eat ice cream, I can't walk on bare carpet. If my hands are pruny, the thought of a dry towel is almost vomit-inducing. It's always related to my teeth though. Not sure why. Glad I found a group of people with the same problem. Maybe we all have the same crossed wires upstairs.
