Hello,

My mother is 85 years old and have been using self catheter for over 2 years now. she heard there is a procedure similar to colostomy wherein they will open a hole on her abdomen so she can pee from there instead of using catheter which have been very difficult for her.

Also, can you recommend a doctor who specializes in this procedure or any other alternative procedure?

Thank you

In most cases when urethral catheterization is not practical to be performed, a suprapubic cystostomy is a favored option.
During procedure of suprapubic cystostomy or vesicostomy, a surgically-created connection between the urinary bladder and the skin of the anterior abdominal wall, is made.
The catheter is inserted through a tract or skin-bladder connection and drains urine into a bag.
It is a well-tolerated procedure with minimal risk for complications like urinary tract infections, bladder stones, blood in urine, skin infections and catheter blockage.
Another possible alternatives for intermittent catheterization are implantation of the artificial urinary sphincter for control of urination and urethral prosthesis in the management of chronic urinary retention in women.
You may consult surgeon, specialized in urology or gynecologist!

Best wishes!
