Hello! I was wondering if anyone could tell me what this could be. Yesterday, my big toe on my right foot began to hurt very bad. It was throbbing and would hurt even when I didn't put weight on it and when nothing was touching it. When I woke up this morning, it still hurt just as bad but after a few hours the pain died down, and now it only hurts if I touch it. Originally, the left side looked swollen and there was a white part between the edge of the toenail and the skin. This is what it looks like now:

The right side used to bleed and hurt frequently, but it always stopped every so often and doesn't hurt at the moment. All help is appreciated. Thanks!

Especially eHealthy
dac,

It looks like you have a paronychia, or infection around the nail. The pain probably decreased when it started to drain, which relieved the pressure. You also have cut your toenail very short. Most podiatrists recommend that it be cut straight across at the end of the pulp, or just a couple of millimeters shorter.

Keep the area clean with soap and water. But, if it gets more swollen or the pain comes back, you might need some antibiotics or drainage of the abscess (or both). If that occurs, you probably need to see your physician.
