If its hurting you. Get the surgery. Sometimes they dont require immediate surgery but ifits hurting there is no reason not to have it. Find a doctor thats done hundreds if not thousands of them. I had mine fixed at Miriam Hospital in RI a year ago May 10th. Find a doctor that sutures the mesh in place and doesnt use the stupid clips or staples. My abdomnimal wall was so bad the surgeon put a "flag of mesh" across the front of my lower abdomen from side to side. I was in and out the same day. Back to work in 10 days and back to doing light yard work in three weeks. By summers end the only thing I noticed was that I wasnt in constant pain anymore. Few tips for you.
1- Eat a low residue diet and water yourself well for the days leading up to surgery. Trust me you DONT want to have to strain the first few days after surgery!
2- I went thru my whole recovery with no pain meds except during the surgery. Ask for a scopalomine patch if pain meds make you sick.
Rest, take it easy for the first 5 or 6 days. Stay down as much as you can with a pillow under your knees for support. Lay flat on your back.
3- No matter what anyone tells you DO NOT ICE YOUR TESTICLES! When they shrink from the cold it HURTS. They are going to swell and I mean swell. Mine were the size of a grapefruit. Wear tighty whiteys for support. Ice the area above your penis and to the sides. Dont put it directly on either! It sounds scary but if you are carefull and gentle on yourself its bearable.
The swelling goes away in about a week. Mine turned black and blue as well. Im a paramedic and I panicked when I saw them. Its normal and appeared the day after after the surgery for me. Some guys get it some guys dont.
A year later I have had no complications, no problems with the mesh and no real lingering effects. I have a few twinges of pain if i over stretch still but they are diminishing with time.
When you hear the horror stories about the mesh keep this in mind. A person that has a bad experience with something will tell EVERYONE. Most people that have NO problems dont bother saying anything. So you tend to see more negative feedback that postive feedback. All those posts scared me too. Most people have no issues. I feel for the ones that do..it can be miserable. Complication rates are low if you use a GOOD surgeon.
Oh yeah for the record Im 45 years old, slightly over weight and not in tip top shape....just for comparisons sake.
