Q: Burning sensation in head

Hi,

I am a 23 year old Male, and for the past month I have been experiencing a strange sensation in my head that is hard to explain - but I will do my best to describe it here. It comes on every 5 seconds or so and lasts for about 2 seconds at a time. I guess it feels like a burning sensation, although the pain is quite mild. I also experience an ache within my left ear, and sometimes a slight ache in my throat but these aches are not always constant. I would say they are present for about 70% of the day, where as the sensation in my head is 100% of the day. The muscles around my shoulder blades also seem a little tight, and yesterday I tried massaging myself around this area, and when I hit a certain spot I would get a short headache in my temples that lasted for less than a second... but every time I did this, I got the head ache every time. Sometimes (but quite infrequently) I feel the same pain on the right side of my head too, and I also experience shooting pains in strange places like my earlobes and rib area, which last for less than a second and again occur infrequently.

I have been to the Doctor a few times in the last couple of weeks, as I want to be sure it is nothing serious like a tumour. (I've never had anything like this my whole life, so it is all a bit worrying for me). They are not sure what it is, but think it is unlikely to be anything serious since the headaches are not strong, and I am not sick/nauseous. Also, they said that I would probably experience problems with my sight and/or hearing... The Doctor examined my ears, eyes, and throat quickly and said there was nothing of any concern there, but I know that it can't be right to be feeling like this constantly for so long! They have prescribed me with Migrane tablets, which didn't seem to do anything, and today they prescribed me with Diclofenac Sodium tablets which I have to start taking tomorrow. They said it is likely to be Tension Headaches, although having done some research online, I am not sure my symptoms quite fit this diagnosis as the pain in my head is at the top left (right by the crown), and not at the front of my head like traditional headaches.

Can anyone put my mind at ease and tell me what the problem might be? I feel a bit like the Doctors think I am wasting their time, but I am just want to be sure it is nothing serious.

Thanks for any help/advice you may be able to give!

Extremely eHealthy
Do you get these head pains occurring as a single stab or a series of stabs (resembling a stab from an icepick, nail, or needle) and typically lasting from a fraction of a second to 1 to 2 seconds?
Are you experiencing them with an irregular frequency, ranging from 1 to many per day?
Do they appear always in the same locations, predominantly at orbit, temple, parietal area, usually, at one side of the head?

I've just noticed your user name, and I'm interested if it is based on your real experience of hand weakness and slow movements.

Thanks for replying. The head pains occur as single stabs but very frequently - every 5-10 seconds. I wouldn't say they resemble a stab from either an icepick, nail, or needle as the pain isn't that strong. It just feels like a burning sensation almost like a mild heartburn but in my head. They always appear in the same location which is in the top left hand region of my head, but I sometimes also get them in other areas as well, although not very often.

Sorry, my username is just a musical reference and has nothing to do with hand weakness or slow movements... I should have picked a better name!

Thanks for your help!!

yes i am 19 year old female and having the same symtoms. I go very scared and started thinkng it is a tumor but i don't feel sick, weak, nauseous or started problems hearing( i wear glases), the more i go around asking peopleit does seem common. I as told it could be Parasthesias, caued by spinal issues (maybe that's why your neck hurts), allerges etc. tomorrow i amgoing to do a CT on my head and spine to make certain, you should do the same.

I also have a head burning sensation but mine actually feels like my head is on fire.Sometimes i think it could be to getting upset.I have actually stood in front of a fan just to cool my head off.Ive been to seveal doctors in the past but it seems they are bumfuzzled with this. However i can take a valium or xanax and they do seem to help for a while. All this started during my first divorce so sometimes i think its a side effect from depression or something>The only thing is that sometimes i will be totally fine and it will start burning.

Its just irritating more than anything, and Im scared it could be something that dehydrated my Cerebral Spinal Fluid, what is this? Im scared I hope its not a tumor my vision the past year, esp recently is horrible too

Burning sensation in head
I'm not a doctor but I have experienced back and neck tension most of my adult life. What I find interesting here is that this appears to be a common problem. My 22 yr. old daughter is presently experiencing a burning sensation on the front, right side of her head similar to what slowhand85 described but on the other side of the head. Here's what I suggest to any and all of you... First, don't freak out over this until you know for certain what's causing the burning and pain otherwise you could make things worse for yourself. I'm a true believer in the benefits of a professionally given full body massage provided by a RMT (registered massage therapist) - not just any massage therapist. If that helps, then your symptoms are likely due to stress or poor posture or weak core muscles. If that doesn't work, make certain that your health is generally good - no underlying disease (e.g. diabetes, etc.). If your health is good, then it may not hurt to speak to your doctor about having some testing done (e.g. blood tests, CT scan, etc.) in case there's nerve damage or other injury not readily visible. My daughter reports that she started having the burning sensation after she came back from vacation in Jamaica. She had some mosquito bites from there so who knows; could be a germ that she picked up from the insects. She too is seeing her doctor this week to find out what the cause is. If we get a definitive answer, I'll let you all know. Good Luck All.
