I am in desperate search for reassurance/insight/suggestions on this... I am at the end of my teather and have lost almost all confidence in medical professionals...although I suppose that's not a reasonable thing to say seeing as they are only human after all...

Ever since August last year, I have been getting a burning pain, localised around the inside of the outer ball joint of my left wrist. Since then I have tried numerous solutions...the history thus far...

GP:

Action: GP prescribes anti-inflamatories and suspects hypermobility.
Outcome: No change after anti-inflamatories is finished.

Action: GP prescribes MORE anti-inflamatories and a carpul brace.
Outcome: Once again no change after anti inflamatories is finished.

Action: GP sends for X-Rays
Outcome: No visible soft-tissue damage...Carpul index is only 0.01 outside of the norm...

Physio-Therapist:

Action: GP prescribes...once more...anti inflamatores...and sends me to a physio-therapist.
Outcome: Physio flames GP for suggesting hyper-mobility and says it's not a possibility. Physio is frustrated at the fact that I can't tell her when or how the pain occurs.

Action: Physio starts doing needle work on my wrist.
Outcome: No change at next session

Action: Physio realises that my neck and left shoulder is in spasmism and, thinking that it is referred pain, starts doing needle work on neck and shoulder.
Outcome: No change at next session except for being able to look in my "blind-spot" again...(Never noticed that it was a problem untill it was actually fixed!!)

Action: Physio does more needlework on neck and shoulder.
Outcome: No change at next session.

Action: Physio decides to try doing needlework on elbow instead.
Outcome: No change...except for dull pain in elbow.

Action: Physio gives up and passes me on to a colluege whom massages and stretches the shoulder/arm to relieve "Nervous tention"
Outcome: Neck and shoulder no longer in spasmism at next session BECAUSE I am now on Urbanol and Zopiclone (which has muscle relaxant properties)...as prescribed by Psychiatrist...so the physio realises it can NOT be referred pain.

So the Physio has now referred me to an occupational therapist whom I saw this morning. According to her, it might be the cartlidge in my wrist...what's more, is that she told me I have "Hyper mobile joints". DARN IT ALL!!! I am back to square one!!!!

She is going to be contacting a hand-surgeon to get some ideas/opinions so hopefully that would give me something CONCRETE and an affirmation on the Hypermobility.

I have lax ligaments and hyper mobile joints but am all too easily persuaded otherwise, especially in the absence of medical proof and especially because I don't want to seem like a hypocondriac by insisting it is...The one doctor says it is HMS...the other says it's not. Now, the possibility of "Connective tissue disorder" is popping up AGAIN...

How can I once and for all have this confirmed/denied...and any ideas suggestions on the burning sensation in my wrist???

HAS ANYONE CONSIDERED CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME OR CERVICAL SPINE PROBLEMS? YOU SHOULD MAYBE CONSIDER AN EMG TEST AND X-RAY OR MRI OF THE CERVICAL SPINE. (I WORK FOR A PHYSIATRIST)

I have the EXACT same symptoms! I had left shoulder surgery in May of this year due to an injury at work (I work at a hospital, lifting & moving patients is part of the job). My shoulder surgeon repaired a small labral tear due to the injury (which was back in Sept '07 but taken this long through work comp system, and finding a diagnosis) ... BUT he said I needed the joint to be tightened as well because it was hypermobile (FIRST time I'd ever heard of this!)

When the injury happened 2 years ago, I immediately felt pain in my left shoulder (the side of my body used to lift the patient). The next day: tingling and numbness in left thumb & index finger. A couple of days later: burning pain in left wrist. What followed was an EMG & then diagnosis of carpal tunnel (from an ACUTE injury ... whatever!) Then after months of failed response from anti-inflammatories & physical therapy, the suggestion of carpal tunnel release surgery. In the meantime, I started overcompensating with my right arm to protect the left, and started getting numbness, tingling and pain in my right hand, wrist & forearm. The Carpal Tunnel Release surgery was denied by work comp. Then nothing happened for months. I took matters into my own hands (excuse the pun) since I still felt dull aching in my shoulder & thought the prob might be coming from there ... I got auth to see a shoulder surgeon in Dec '08 (a year after the injury). I also told him about my wrist symptoms. He recommended a referral to a hand specialist (which I had already been seen ... can you say PING PONG?!) ... but this was denied by work comp as well anyway.

My shoulder surgery went well, and I am 6 months post-surg. My wrist symptoms also cleared up considerably over the course of 2 years and not working ... HOWEVER ... a week and a half ago, I did some baking for a friend's babyshower, and both my wrists have flared up like crazy! INTENSE pain in both wrists (I'm struggling to type, but am so excited to have found someone with the same symptoms ... I was beginning to think I was CRAZY!), and numbness & tingling in both hands & fingers ... like pins & needles.

I have lost all faith in the medical community to help me, and I am saddened & coming to terms with the fact that I don't think I'm going to be able to go back to work, doing what I was doing, and enjoyed Sad

I wish you all the best, and if I ever find an answer ... I'll get back to you!
