Q: Bruxism - night mouth guard (splint) problem

Hi, I've been suffering from bruxism for a few years now (I'm 29) and recently resolved to see a dentist. I have been provided with a custom-fit mouthguard, yet I find it very hard to sleep in it and also it hurts my teeth because it's so tight. After I've used the nightguard at night, during the day I can feel my teeth being sore more than they used to be. Also I can't properly clench my teeth together, my jaw rests on the hinder part of the mouthguard and my front teeth don't touch, and this make me chew and grind even more than before when wearing the guard.

My dentist has told me that I just need to give it time and get used to it, but I'm new to this dentist and don't know whether I should trust him .. any recommendations? Has anyone experienced teeth pain because of a too tight nightguard?

Thanks

Yes, I've experienced the sore teeth from wearing a night guard. It's worse in the morning. But it sounds like your night guard is not properly fitted. You may want to insist upon having it relined or get a new one.
