Bruising under kneecap....I fell mid November 2011...landed on my left knee and palms.. I thought I had just scraped my kneecap. After a week, I could not kneel on my left knee with out extreme pain. I did go to the Dr a week later and after X-rays, nothing was broken. I can walk and do normal activities without any pain at all.. But still after almost 3 months I cannot kneel on the left. I thought is was getting better. I am 58 . Should I get an MRI, or am I overdoing it by not elevating it and keeping it iced. Thanks My knee itself is ok, I can bend, sit and stand with no problem, the problem is right below the kneecap.

ladyofthelake,

There are several things that you could have injured in that area.

You may have sustained a bone bruise of the proximal part of the tibia. This would show up on MRI, but there is no treatment for it except time.

You may have set up some inflammation in one of the bursae around the lower part of the knee, causing a bursitis.

You could have injured the fat pad, which is located under the patellar tendon. Again, this would show up on an MRI, but there is no real treatment for it.

However, if the area is just not getting any better, you may want to see an orthopedic surgeon for a thorough evaluation.

Good luck.
