I have been bleeding a brown, very light discharge instead of a period. It has been going on between 4-5 months and I am not sexually active. What could have happened? What is my problem, and should I see a doctor?

It is best for you to see a doctor.

Brown blood is normally old blood. It occurs when you bleed very lightly so that it takes a while for it to come out of your uterus and cervix. An unexplained change like this in your menstrual pattern should be looked at.

Blood is red. Whenitissubjected to air, it becomes brown. Blood from your uterus does not clot like normal blood. So older bood coming from your uterus is brown.

Breakthrough bleeding and spotting the first few cycles of starting birth control pills are not unusual. This is often brown because it can take a while to come out.

Your back pain can also be a side effect of the pills.

If you think something is wrong, see your doctor.

Best of luck!
