I have been having brown discharge lately and i have never had it happen to me for more than one day, It only happens usually the day before i get my period. I missed my period last month and got it at the beggining of this month. My period was irregular until i started using Birth control (Loestrin 24) I stopped taking it about a year ago. My period has been right on time until last month. I am sexually active also and i have been diagnosed with HPV, but that's all i know. I'm waiting for an obgyns appointment that's in 2 weeks. Im freaking out because I don't know why i'm having brown discharge and has lasted more than 2 days now. I also don"t have any warts or indication of having HPV, i found out thru a pap smear. Im just very concerned about it because i don't know if it has anything to do with the HPV or anything else.

Hi, and thanks for your medical question on eHealth forum!

Take a pregnancy test first as you missed periods. The discharge can be due to pregnancy. HPV can cause just cervical inflammation and infection and this can cause brown discharge. If there is change is cells of cervix, then low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, or LGSIL are most common and easily treatable by cauterization. Most are treated through a waitt and watch policy. So if you do not have warts, then probably you had LGSIL in PAP which is linked to HPV.

There are no actual tests for HPV except for showing presence of virus DNA in lesions. Please discuss in detail with your gynecologist. Hope this helps. Take care!
