Q: Brown discharge during menstruation
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 19th, 2009
My period is due today. But all I'm getting is a brown discharge.
I usually get the brown discharge a few hours before the period but then I also have the feeling, cramps and backache. I do not have any of these complaints, just brown discharge since last night.
I have been having un-protected sex for almost 6 months. Could I be pregnant?

The brown discharge is usually not a sign of pregnancy. Light pink bleeding might be implantation bleeding (bleeding which occurs when the embryo is embedded in the inner lining of the uterus), but the brown color is not typical for implantation bleeding.

More likely, the brown discharge without the usual additional symptoms (cramps and backache) is just a variation in your menstrual period pattern that is still within the normal variations.

However, no one can tell for sure whether you are pregnant or not without a proper physical examination, hormonal laboratory tests and ultrasound scan performed by a gynecologist whom you are advised to visit.
