Q: broken ankle

I slipped on the ice and broke my ankle on 3/1/09. The emergency dept doctor at one of the local hosptals installed a plate and some screws. also a cast. about a week later I went in and the doctor took off the cast and xrayed. "sorry I have to operate again and put in a longer screw". Is this common operateing procedure??
