Q: Breathing difficulties with multinodular goiter

Three doctors (the radiologist who looked at my ultrasound, the PA who told me the diagnosis, and my brother-in-law) told me that my multinodular goiter isn't causing my breathing problems. Except I've been having labored breathing (like through a straw) for a month now. It gets worse in the late afternoon/evening.

Sometimes, I have a feeling like someone is gently choking me around my neck and, for the past 2 days, my shirt collars feel too tight. If the nodules are so small, why am I having these symptoms? Can this type of goiter shrink and swell the thyroid itself?

My TSH levels are normal and I don't really have any symptoms of either hyper or hypothyroidism.

Besides the Thyroid there are several causes of breathlessness(eg disease of respiratory system, Cardiovascular causes and causes associated with conditions as simple as anemia or allergic induced) and it is important to know whether the breathlessness is of recent onset or the same existed before the goiter appeared.Your Radiologist might have assessed your thyroid either by Ultrasound or CT imaging that tells whether The thyroid is responsible for breathlessness or not eg if there is large goiter compressing windpipe(or mediastinal goiter that can compress the windpipe) or not.
Besides you may get your thyroidologist's opinion regarding the same or your family physician also can tell you if you are suffering from causes other than Thyroid disease that may be responsible for your breathlessness.
Regular check up of your thyroid status by your Radiologist and expert advice would go a long way to address your concern.

Just to follow up, the final diagnosis for the breathing difficulty was GERD.
