Breakthrough bleeding on pop
Posted: 07-13-08 10:41am

I began taking the pop, Cerazette on 18th June, the first day of my period. I had no problems for 2 weeks, until the 3rd July when i started breakthrough bleeding. I know this can be common when starting on the contraceptive pill, after a week of bleeding and no signs of stopping i went back to the clinic where i was given a new mini pill called Micronor. However it has now been 11 days since the bleeding started, with no breaks im wondering is this normal? Is there anything i can do to stop it?

The active substances in Cerazette and Micronorthese are different but both types of pills belong to the same group of "progesteron-only pills (POP)" or "mini pills". So both types of birth control pills have similar side effects. Irregular bleeding is a very common side effect of both pill-types. That bleeding is not normal but still expected and there is nothing you can do to stop it.
Have you ever had similar vaginal bleeding before start using the pills?

POP's don't really control your period, so it's not really breakthrough bleeding (because they aren't supposed to suppress bleeding). So your period should run on it's own natural schedule. It might just be that you're having an irregular cycle (which is understandable since messing with hormones)

All you can really do it wait it out. Is it heavy bleeding? If it's a lot, you'll want to see a doc to make sure you aren't losing too much blood. But if it's light/spotting, you just gotta wait it out.

I was on ortho micronor for a while. Is there a medical reason you're on it, and not on a combined pill? Because they'll control you're period a lot better.

Ive never had anything like this before i started using the pill. It was very light and dark bleeding, like i get at the end of my period, however for the past few days since changing to micronor it has become very red/pink. As of today i've been on the pill for one month, 3 weeks taking cerazette and 1 week taking micronor, i've had this bleeding for 2 weeks. There was a half a day break on sunday when it changed from dark brown to pink/red colour. I'm on the mini pill as ive lost 6stone in weight, but they want me to lose another stone (which im struggling to do) before they will put me on the combined pill, due to increased risk of blood clots i think. It's annoying because i dont know when its going to stop, also it feels kind of useless to be on the pill as my partner and i cant be intimate while im bleeding.

Yeah, that stinks. I hope it clears up soon for you. Even though the pop isn't supposed to control your period, it still might affect your bleeding.

I've heard of people choosing to take POP's because of the lower risk of blood clots, but I've never heard that has anything to do with weight. Plus, POP's (progesterone types of birth control in general) tend to make it hard to lose weight. Especially if the bleeding continues, I'd question your doc about why that decision was made and consider going back to a combined pill that will control your bleeding better.

On another note, you can have sex while you're on your period!! There's really not that much blood, and you can have a romantic shower together when you're done if need be. Unless your guy gets really hung up about it, some guys do.

In about 50% of women who take "mini pills" the ovulation is suppressed and these women either have irregular "periods" or no periods at all. In the other 50% of women the ovulation is not suppressed and those women should have regular periods as they had them before. Your irregular bleeding is probably side effect of the "mini pills" so I would recommend you to try standing for few more months until body gets use to the outside hormones. It is true that "mini pills" have less side effects and risks than combined pills. If the bleeding can't be stand you can try another contraceptive method.
