Q: BP meds necessary ?

So I go to my Doctor... Have my Blood Prressure Checked, and it is high.

I lose 42lbs over the next 3 months and go back for a full physical, and my BP is the exact same thing.

I was reading a Systolic of 160-170 ove a Diastolic of 90-100.

My doc recommends BP meds as I increased my exercising, decreased my diet and dropped 42lbs. I am not extremely overweight, and have always been an athlete so I ahev always been rather healthy.

Before starting the meds, I bought a "recommended" home BP cuff. My measurements were from 135/85 in the evening to 120/76 in the AM. So I would say I am fine...

ANy recommendations if I should take the BP meds or just not do it.

Does "white Coat" syndrome cause a bump of 30-40 points on systolic and 20points on the diastolic?

I am going to call my doc, but I wanted to get other opinions too.

My advice would be to stay off of the medications- not only do they often have terrible side effects, but can be hard and sometimes even damaging to quit. If you stick to the lifestyle changes you have made you will be much better off in the long run.

It is also entirely possible that your white coat concerns could be true. Just getting dressed raises your blood pressure on average by 11.5/9.7 over your resting bp!

Your weight has definitely brought your reading down...This is important...However, your age may have a bearing on his thoughts...I believe the doctor is looking at the whole picture with you....He saw the higher reading to start and knows that you may be prone to going higher when you are in stress....I guess this is the way that I look at mine...I don't like to be on medications, but I have to....I have also learned to respect what the doctor says as far as my health...I can speak only of me and my family's history....

Hopefully a few words that I have said may help you....Take care...

they say that having high blood pressure and high cholesterol are silent killers. for this reason i dont think i should or would persuade anyone to not take meds. this would have to be a personal choice to do so.
just because i dont believe in most medication, you thoughts may be differ.
i do want you to know that a study was done on a cholesterol med called zitia vs. niacin (b vitamin) and the people who took the niacin blood pressure was lowered and the people who have taken zitia had no changes.
this upsets me so much when people who are on this drug is depending on it to help the.
inturn, there are other medication that works well.
so please weight the pros and cons of both sides.
