Q: Bowel movement after galbladder removal ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 29th, 2009
I had gall bladder removal on Wednesday. Everyone keeps telling me that I should have diarrhea or a need to use the bathroom for bowel movements. I haven't had a bowel movement since Tuesday. Should I be concerned?

Diarrhea is not a common occurrence after gallbladder surgery. However, constipation is fairly common after major surgery, due to the use of narcotic pain medications and decreased oral intake. Your doctor can prescribe something to help you with your perioperative constipation.
