Q: Blood testing at OBGYN
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 17th, 2009
I just have a quick question. I have not seen my OBGYN yet.
I see him for the first time next friday. They did do blood testing. The nurse was busy so I didn't ask about all the tests they would be running.
I was not entirely sure on the date of my last period it was either the first week or second week of feburary.

I know one of the tests were for HIV what about the other 5 vials they took. What is normailly run?

It's been a while since my last pregnancy.

If there was somthing abonormal in the tests would they contact me asap to discuss or wait a week to speak to me?

Laboratory tests for woman in 6th gestational week might include (some of them only if needed): sedimentation rate for possible infections, complete blood count with hemoglobin, hematocrite and serum iron (for detecting anemia in pregnancy), fasting blood glucose (for detecting gestational diabetes), urea and creatinin (for detecting kidneys’ condition), ASAT and ALAT (for checking liver condition in pregnancy), beta-HCG and PAPPA (pregnancy-associated plasma protein A) for calculating risk for congenital anomalies of the baby, blood group with Rh factor, HBsAg for detecting Hepatitis B, screening for HIV, rubella, syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases like: gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Lab tests might also include more expensive tests, such as the sexual hormones: estrogen (3 types), progesterone, FSH and LH.
Not all laboratory tests are included necessarily. Which laboratory tests will be done might depend on the previous health condition and the health insurance.
