Hi there I had a test for Hypoglycemia but the 3 hour one a while back due to symptoms. My doc said I didn tseem to have it but I was having the symptoms anyway to make a long story short I borrowed my father in laws blood sugar tester it is a pretty good one he has diabetes.
I want to know how high should our blood sugar rise directly after eating sugary stuff. What is the norm for that.

Here are my readings I am sorry I am from Canada so I only know the readings this way...

Morning before food- 4.8

3 hours after breakfast- 4.7

2 hours after supper and cake- 4.8

Today I woke up and took it- 4.7

then ate tea Some cereal with sugar and a glass of fruity juice. I took it directly after and it was 7.8???? So it went from 4.7 to 7.8 but this was about 10 min after I ate I took it. I know it is supposed to rise but how much. I am all freaked out.

So I took it again in 15 min and it was 7.0.

I will do the 2 hours now and take it again but Now I have myself All worried I am no doc so I dont know what exactly the normal rise should be as soon as finished eating.

If anybody can help that would be great and appreciated........THANK YOU!!!!

JUst to add to this. I test just about 2 hours after I ate all the sugar things mentioned and it went down to 5.6 so I am assuming that is all okay and it is slowly going back to normal not drastically???
I was told that any type of sugar even in healthy people it will rise?

What symptoms are you experiencing?

Those results look fairly normal to me. Hypoglycemia would only be a concern if the 2 hour or 3 hour results where below 3mmol/l (for reactive hypo).

Your fasting reading is perfectly normal. If this was around 7 and your 2 hour after sugary food was around 10 this might indicate diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance.

I don't know too much about it but there appears to be a condition called 'Idiopathic postprandial syndrome' with similar symptoms that doesn't have the accompanying blood sugar fluctuations.

good luck

Well My doc did not give me a clear answer as to whether I have hypoglycemia she said the results were okay when I had the 2 or 3 hour glucose test.
I know I dont have diabetes I am always low on everything.
I do experience crazy symptoms though where I feel like I am going to pass out or I get shakey and feel nausous. MY gutt sometimes just feels funny and I ave a hungry feeling. Anyway So I will drink orange juice or eat something and I usually feel better after. Not always but most of the time.
I also have anxiety (so the docs say) and I have a hard time knowing what is what.
I always stuff my face before I go out because I am scared I will have an episode at the store or something. It has happened. I have never passed out though or anything major I just feel soooo out of control and horrible.

Anyway Thanks for the reply!!!!

Above is what I wrote in the first messege regarding my home testing. Today I woke up and didnt eat much and had a small bowl of cereal and tea around 11. took my sugar reading about 1.5 hours after and it was at 5.6. Didnt eat anything else took my son to preschool and came home, symptoms started so I decided to check it and it was 3.6.....!!!! It scared me because I was actually beginning to think maybe I didn thave hypo since I was reading pretty good all week with sugar.
I have never been diagnosed with hypoglycemia I did have the 2 hour glucose test and nothing was showing up extreme or anything but continue to feel crappy.
Can a normal healthy adult have their levels drop if they have not eaten enough even to the low range of hypo but still not have it??
I am so confused by all this.

What's your diet like and how much sugar are consuming day to day? Also how often do you have things like caffeine, alcohol, soups, ready meals, white bread and rice, sauces, dressings, fast food?

If the cereal you ate was frosted or contains sugar its quite possible you experienced a minor drop is blood sugar.

3.6 is right on the limits of normal. In my experience you would begin to feel symptoms coming on around that level. If you can cope with it continue to take readings to see whether it drops any further.

Do you have any other symptoms present generally? Do you feel fatigued alot? achy eyes? Constant craving for refined carbs? (bread, sweets, chips etc)

Certain conditions can bring about hypoglycemia, such as food intolerance, adrenal fatigue and yeast infections. However these tend to have numorous other symptoms.

Start thinking about your diet and seeing what foods might be causing you problems.

Good luck

Thanks for replying. I actually borrowed my father in laws tester and ran out of needles after the 3.6 reading DARN!!! So I am hoping I can get some more from him tonight.

I do feel fatigued alot but I also havent been well since the birth of my son and have never felt myself since then 4 years ago. They all say it is stress and anxiety etc... I have had many tests and 2 pregnancies where they tested my sugars and never been an issue so I dont know why I feel the way I do or why they cant catch it or diagnose.

As for craving I do crave chocolate or ice cream sometimes even a certain type of chips. It doesnt seem extreme to me though but I find some days I can do without then I feel like something sweet but I always thought it was normal to crave foods even veggies I do sometimes Smile

As for breads pasta and stuff like that its difficult to say because I dont eat any of it due to my mom having celiac disease (gluten intolerence) so I went off gluten when I became ill. So Yes I do crave breads but I also miss them and dont eat them so that could be the cause of the cravings....

I am not sure how much sugar I consume a day . I do have a cup of tea with 1 or 2 scoops of sugar and I do drink a lot of orange juice apple etc......Try not to drink pop but when I do it is sprite. Anyway I am sure I do consumer alot of sugar but I also dont eat cookies and cake etc... unless they are gluten free which I rarely get. So I dont snack on a lot of sugar unless it is chocolate or juice, fruit etc..

My cereal I had today was rice krispies and I added a small pinch of sugar. I also had the same thing the day before and I seemed fine.

Should I continue to eat sugar and test to see what happens?? If the 3.6 dropped for a bit but came back up without dropping any further then is that maybe something I don thave to worry about?

Sorry so many questions just trying to figure this stuff out so I can do it properly.
Hope I answered your questions okay without rambling on.

My family thinks I am too worried and it is "just my anxiety" when I havent had any anxiety attacks in a while and felt fine.
