Q: Blood sugar drops between meals

I think I may have hypoglycemia. I purchased a glucose meter & found that my blood sugar drops in between meals. If I have a big breakfast, snacks throughout the day and a large dinner (no food after CoolI wake up with blood sugar in the low 90s. I had a bad dinner (frozen pizza) last nite& woke up with my blood sugar at 75 I had a breakfast burrito & was forced to take a late lunch at work. I started feeling dizzy and checked my blood sugar,it dropped to 60 and I was only able to bring it back by eating 2 packs of sugar, orange juice & a subway sandwich. I feel kind of hung over now and my blood sugar is sitting at about 95. It was a scary experience & I find myself always worrying about food. This has happened about 3 times in the last month, could I have dieted & exhausted myself into this (I have 2 jobs enjoy cycling and was staying up late working until this became an issue)? I have been monitoring the situation for 1 month now.

It's possible you could have 'dieted' into this, but it's more likely that your body has finally had enough and is shooting out too much insulin.

Is there any coming back from this? I realized I wasn't eating as much as I should. I actually have to force food down these days. Trying to eat every coupl of hours.Still paranoid about my blood. Not gaining weight!

Yes, there is, but it takes a lot of time, hard work, discipline, and a LOT of patience.

Thanks Stan. I sent you a message about a diet (yours?) I read about on another thread... The good thing is I never really ate or enjoyed sugar and sweets. i'm eating alot of chicken, vegetables, and some red meat (I ate a junior sized hamburger on wheat bread and it gave me new life one day)I really think I brought this on myself. I always ate pretty healthy due to my cycling (long gone pastime)but used to go up to 8 hours without eating and working hard. Rarely slept until it all came down. Now I'm worried because I'm eating 2 or 3 eggs a day (eggs are my best foods to make it through the morning) and still can't gain weight! Job is sometimes labor intensive and I'm forced to keep going 10 hours. I eat like a beast now and I'm seeing progress. Should I worry that I'm not gaining weight? My co workers and I agree that our job is a workout on it's own. Could that be why I stay at one constant weight?

The sugar issue may be giving you trouble retaining weight. Increasing your fat intake slightly should do the trick pretty well.

Stan, can I ask how long ago you were diagnosed with hypoglycemia? When did the worst of your symptoms start to go away. I was diagnosed four months ago. I feel like I'm getting better each day, but I still have my panicky and shaky moments. Thank you!

I was technically diagnosed about six years ago, but after experimenting with several diet options it wasn't until about two years ago that I felt better. That's mainly because the diets I read about in books (like Hypoglycemia for Dummies) were totally incorrect. So I would say, when I finally got it right, it probably took around five months to feel better.
