Blood in the stool can occur for a number of reasons. Most blood seen in stools in the bright red form which suggests a source lower down in the intestines or at the anus. Fissures (tears) in the skin around the anus are a common cause for streaks of bright red blood on the stool. Hemorrhoids can also cause the appearance of blood in the stool. Pain or discomfort with bowel movements are usually an accompanying symptoms with fissures or hemorrhoids.
Inflamation in the colon from an infection or other cause can also lead to blood in the stool. Other signs of illness usually accompany in this situation.
Supportive measures such as a stool softener or lubricant to the anal area may help in fissures or hemorrhoids. I suggest seeing her pediatrician if she has other symptoms accompanying blood in the stool or if the complaint fails to resolve with conservative measures mentioned above.
