asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 18th, 2008
Had a blood sugar test with nurse .....using pinprick/strip/mini meter.... this a.m

Result was 22

Had however 1-1.5 hours previous had cereal ( 1 spoon sugar) and tea (with 2 spoons sugar).
Eaten fair bit of choc and drank coke over last 7 days.
Awaiting proper result from lab but is this pin prick result alarming?

No increased thirst or frequency of urination. Although more urgency here. slight weight loss 5lbs in 6 months?

Blood glucose levels
The blood glucose level should be measured when hungry or 1.5-2 hours after the meal. The glucose level should be under 6.7 mmol/L. A value of 22 mmol/L is alarming but you also need the value of glycolised hemoglobin A (HbA1c) to evaluate the long term glucose regulation. HbA1c should be under 7%.
